About this deal

During that activation, a friendly NOVITIATE operative with the Staunch specialism performed a mission action. The penitent is a better version of the Penitent in the Compendium list. She has an autopistol, giving her some ranged ability, and an eviscerator with 4 dice, 4+ to hit, 5/6 Brutal and Reap 2. Reap is situational and dependent on enemy models being close to each other, but if you can multi charge this model rewards you for it, as Absolution Through Destruction means that for 1AP you get two Fight actions together. This means you can, with reasonable dice, chainsaw your way through a couple of guard equivalents in your activation, or chop up a marine equivalent. To make your first Fight action even more likely to succeed, Zealous Rage means that in your first Fight action of the turn you can reroll any or all of your dice, to get as many hits and crits as possible.

That said, this isn’t just going to be about the Tier List and meta – we’ll also be reflecting a bit on these concepts and what they mean. So bundle up on your favorite sofa or lounge chair, get comfortable, and enjoy. Our dataset today includes every major tournament we’ve got data on since January. How important is “The Meta” and how does it affect me? Novitiates don’t just have Acts of Faith, they get some pretty good ploys as well. Acts of Faith mean that you won’t be spending your CPs on rerolls, and this gives you more CPs to spend on ploys that tend to do from decent to excellent. Strategic Ploys Enemy operatives within ⬟ suffer 1 mortal wound each time they perform a Psychic Action. This falls into the niche category, and even then it is of questionable use against the few teams that have access to Psychic powers. DAegis of the Emperor– Any enemy operative performing a psychic action within six inches of a novitiate operative takes a mortal wound. Great for upsetting Grey Knight and Thousand Sons players. Combine with the Condemnor for maximum salt. The standard non-specialist. Novitiates are an example of a team where the number of specialists available is greater than the size of the team, and unlike Navy Breachers or Wyrmblade these non-specialists do not have GA2. This basically means you have zero incentive to ever take them. Novitiate Superior Unflinching determination means Novitiate models within three inches and visible can reroll a defence dice when they get shot at.

Novitiates come with a strong set of useful equipment, so strong in fact, that one item in particular was so good that it amounted to a team-wide reroll 1s to hit ability. This item had its cost doubled in a balance data-slate, but is that enough to give the rest of the inventory a chance to shine?

Diving Into the Events

Divine Shield (2 Faith Points) – The defensive version of Guiding Light. Retain a failed save as a normal save. From a purely mathematical perspective this is more useful than its offensive counterpart. The defense die pools of your average operative is automatically smaller than the die pools of your average ranged weapon as are the odds of success on individual die. Being able to automatically pass a save to prevent an operative from dying can swing a game.

Hierotek – It’s no secret that even after buffs these guys are having a tough time. However, you should never be complacent even in favorable matchups meaning you want to do your best to prevent your opponent from using Reanimation Protocols effectively, additionally the Cryptek with Fly and Magnification Conduit can be a very versatile opponent, and hard to pin down. Immortals also have very effective ranged weapons, and should be given as few targets as possible, while trying to focus on the Plasmacytes. It is important to note that even without these support operatives you should expect your opponent to regain 3-4 operatives over the course of a battle, and take that into account when you attempt to Shoot or Fight them. A Final Thoughts Acts of Faith – Effectively a second pool of Command points that may be used on an additional list of abilities in addition to the ploys they have available to them. Of the team specific abilities you can get in Kill Team this is one of the stronger ones. Adamantine-Weave Surplice (2 EP)– Get a 3+ save. Great for models that you know will get shot at and want to survive. Dialogus and Hospitaller for example.Voidscarred – You have a one operative advantage over these guys, and are similarly armed and armored, the question comes down to what is stronger…Acts of Faith or team-wide free Dash. Normally I’d say speed kills, but in this situation Faith seems to provide a strong edge in both lethality and defensive options. Don’t be overly aggressive, and methodically close with your opponent. B

Novitiates have 2APL, Save 4+ and seven wounds. This means they don’t last long out of cover and don’t last long in combat despite having a really good close combat weapon on a standard human model. CAVE: Care not to break the whips when getting them off the sprue. Besides that, I again recommend to assembly the body first and glue it onto the base before adding the arms. Simply follow the instruction and you should be fine. If you are facing a horde team or Guard equivalents, the first VP is easy to score. If you are fighting an elite team, don’t take this, as it’s too hard to score against marines or equivalents. Reconsecrate Ground Eyes of the Emperor –For 1CP all your auto, bolt and plasma pistols lose the six inch range rule. So plasma pistols can suddenly shoot across the map. This really helps out both your Superior but also all the Novitiates you have wielding autopistols, which are then equivalent to autoguns. This is a really good ploy you will use a lot. If you take out two enemy models with a weapon with the Inferno special rule, score 1VP. If the enemy leader is taken out with a weapon with the Inferno special rule, score 1VP.The Novitiate Superior is ably supported by a number of specialist squadmates who really could only find a place on the battlefields of the 41st Millennium. Take the Novitiate Exactor, the only “covert operative” in history to dual-wield neural whips. Finally, it’s fair to say grenades have become very prevalent across the killzones. The Indirect special rule is incredibly useful, and while we are happy with how grenades work thematically and mechanically, their efficiency and prevalence is noticeable. We’ve therefore used the same change we made to the Kommando’s dynamite in the previous Balance Dataslate (maximum of one), applying it to each offensive grenade in the game. We feel this change will have a significant impact on Pathfinders, Novitiates , Wyrmblade and Veteran Guardsmen , in particular, trimming their potential slightly. Plus the short story collection Ahriman: Exodus , and the audiobook Ahriman: Key of Infinity . It’s quite the epic tale!
