About this deal

A. Barnes a 1/5 as even the ending was lame as it kind of gives everything away in the beginning to then have an annoying chapter format to explain what happened in the past with what’s going on currently. We’re led to question her memories and what she sees, and to sympathize with her struggles against her own self-doubt.

While those similarities are there, and they’re obvious from the start, Dead Silence is its own unique monster full of great writing and well-developed characters. I thought her story dominated the horror, which was the part I personally was looking forward to most. The masterful and artistic way the story is told, events described and twist unfolds keeps you listening and paying attention for clues.

to be fair, it's a pretty exciting opportunity: the discovery of The Aurora; a luxury spacecraft that went missing on its maiden voyage twenty years ago carrying hundreds of passengers—the rich, the famous, and the infamous—whose disappearance became the stuff of legend, speculation, a bermuda-triangle-grade mysteeeeerious phenomenon, and here it is—the chance to make history, solve the mystery, or—for the less noble crew members—fill their pockets with bling. Unfortunately, there’s not a single likable character, and the main character is so loathsome it ruins any chance of this being a good story for me. Ensure you listen to the sample before deciding to spend a credit as you may prefer the written version instead of the audio. Something described as “Titanic” meets “The Shining” is bound to be a unique combination, so I tossed my Sci Fi apprehension aside and took a chance! Torn between her desire to lead a normal life and the pressure from the Center to continue her work tracking down killers, Violet’s world starts to unravel…and some of her most carefully guarded secrets are exposed.

I wish that I wasn’t such a chicken because this sounds really good and I’m kinda tempted to try but also… I’m just The Ultimate Chicken™️? One last thing, I think there could have been a bit more on the explanation with the mystery of what happened on Aurora.

A. Barnes got picked up as part of r/Fantasy’s New Voices Book Club, the description sounded interesting enough to make it worth a try.

i got an ARC of this book back in august 2021, put off reading it until spooktober 2021, and even though i was so excited to be, as this bookmark declares, one of the first readers of this book, and even though the pub date got moved a whole month back, here i sit on delayed-pub-date-eve and i still haven't reviewed it. My biggest issue though was the narrator SHOUTING every time the story had emotional or scary dialog! However, this is no ordinary vessel: they find the Aurora, a renowned luxury space-liner that was packed with rich people, royalty, actors, famous athletes, and other assorted celebrities when it vanished into thin air two decades ago while on its on its maiden tour of the solar system.
