"P L Travers might have liked Mary Poppins onstage". The Toronto Star . Retrieved 2014-03-06. I recently stumbled upon a short cookbook written by P.L. Travers. Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookbook with a Story, first published in 1975, takes place over the course of a week. Mary Poppins and the Banks children, along with several characters from the series, take over the kitchen and create dishes beginning with every letter of the alphabet. A recipe for chocolate Zodiac Cake “decorated with silver stars” stood out above the rest. It produces a simple, thin, nutty cake—a short single layer, with delicate slices just right for serving with tea. I used hazelnuts in the batter, however other nuts can be substituted. The cake was a little on the dry side, so I topped it with a chocolate cream cheese frosting which improved it immensely—and of course, I decorated it with silver stars, just as Mary Poppins would do!Through her connection to Russell, she became friends with poet William Butler Yeats and studied mythology with G.I. Gurdjieff. Ever the imaginative child, Travers loved fairy tales and animals, in particular birds; she often referred to herself as a hen. She had a love of Irish mythology, said to have stemmed from the stories her father told her when she was a child. During her teen years, her writing talents took flight, and eventually her poetry was published in Australian periodicals.

Travers - further papers, 1901–1991, Textual Records, Graphic Materials, Clippings, Photographs, Drawings, 2 boxes - 0.26 Meters, State Library of New South Wales MLMSS 5341 ADD-ON 2130The books portrays five Banks children, Jane and Michael the eldest and who Mary Poppins go on with during most of her magical adventures, John and Barbara who are twins and started going on the magical adventures in the second book and Annabel the youngest and who only joins the magical adventure crew at the middle of the second book. The film only includes Jane and Michael. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar till well combined. Add the egg yolk and beat harder. Add the melted chocolate and ground nuts and mix until just combined. Stir the vanilla into the milk. Add some of the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture. Pour in some of the milk mixture, a little more flour and then some more milk, till both have been used up. Beat very thoroughly. Mary Poppins is a protagonist novel character in a series of children’s books with the same name by P.L Travers who uses magical touch to teach the banks children valuable lessons. She comes in with the East wind and gets to Number seventeen Cherry Tree Lane to Banks home where she is given the responsibility of taking care of the Banks children. She is identified by her trend of wearing a hat and a parrot umbrella that she never leaves behind. She is tender and caring to the children but can be tough and stern if need be. The novel portrays her as practically perfect woman; tall, slender, short haired snub nose with large blue eyes and a pursed nose. The film portrays her as a gracious and elegant young woman a character that is portrayed by Julie Andrews who Travers first thought was too attractive for the role but later accepted after meeting het in person. In 1936, Travers met mystic George Gurdjieff, with the help of her friend Jessie Orange. Travers studied the Gurdjieff System with the help of Jean Harp, an American publisher. George Gurdjieff had a great influence on several literary figures, including Travers.
