If you enjoy books drenched in suspense with characters you can never quite be certain of, you're going to love reading The Skeleton Key. She hid the letters when she received them, went to her grave and the letters were found long after when nothing could be done.

I was doing so good in the first of January at being on top of my reviews, and then I hit this book, and the mehness of it has caused a back-up that I'm trying to get back under control before February hits. Neither has it put me off reading whatever Erin Kelly comes up with next because I know that whatever it is, it will surprise me once again. The magic in Ryan’s work is that he mentions concepts widely known in a way that actually makes you think about them. I loved every word of this, my first book by Erin Kelly, and I will definitely be reading more from this author.Rhiannon found out and managed to get Holly to goad her into hitting her in front of a camera to get her fired.

I also realized that the crucial clue was that Maddie didn’t scream or yell, nor did she protect her head with her hands, which would be instinctive. I come to really like and admire her especially her frequent wry tone but most especially her love and loyalty to her ‘stepdaughter’ Billie who is a shining light among characters with somewhat dubious morals. Sarah is drawn to the abandoned Ambergate Asylum and whilst exploring the old corridors she discovers a suitcase in an attic belonging to a female patient who was admitted to the asylum fifty years earlier. She goes back to the house and sees poisonous cherry laurel berries, the same type that killed Elspeth, crushed in the kitchen sink. she did feel responsible, because she was out of the house, but chances are it wouldn’t have turned out different even if she was there. If she had still been in prison, these would have been even more important because they indicated that she was innocent. As dark secrets were revealed, and family dynamics became more and more dysfunctional, my fascination with these characters made me loath to put the book down. The prison was being torn down, but only 2 years had passed between the writing of the letters and them being found inside the wall?

I will be honest and say that there’s nothing particularly new in “Stillness is the Key”, but how many new books with new ideas are there around? If it was as easy as saying, "Oh, well, if Winston Churchill can take naps, so can I," I think we'd be more well-rested as a society. The conversation among the male officials )and I am a male so I know the implications) strongly suggested that the poor girl had been murdered in prison (I don’t believe that she committed suicide because she had received those supporting letters and, face it, convicted murderers are viscous and really hate child murderers).

The Key is a compelling and fascinating read, one that will stay with you long after you turn that final page. So Rachel was murdered (and not necessarily quickly, considering she was surrounded by hardened criminals). In this senecio Rachel would not keep a secret like that knowing that the truth would exonerated her and because Ellie was only 5 if anything she would receive counseling, she did actually save Rachel’s life from Maddie.
