About this deal

Among its experimental features was the first microprocessor; this chip controlled all aspects of production. Glen Keith experimented with triple distillation and has been rumoured to produce mash bills from grains other than barley. Despite signalling a new era of confidence in the whisky industry it hasn’t been all plain sailing for Glen Keith. By the ’90s, Chivas Brothers had been sold to Pernod Ricard who deemed the distillery surplus to their requirements and put it in mothballs. For 13 years it lay in silence before extensive reconstruction work began in 2012. The distillery reopened the following year and once again began producing liquid for use in blends like Chivas Regal, Passport and 100 Pipers.

Nose: very accessible, but very attractive as well. A mix of vanilla cake with sweet orchard fruits (apricots, juicy pears, grapes) and light tropical touches (bananas, vitamin juice). Honeyed corn flakes. A hint of Belgian Tripel as well (specifically Karmeliet).Taste: Arrival is just as sweet as the nose. Lots of vanilla, some honey, a touch of bitter tea and an assortment of oak spices.

James Middleton, channel director for impulse at Pernod Ricard UK, said the launch of Glen Keith Distillery Edition follows a 90% increase in sales of single malt Scotch whisky in the UK impulse segment in the eight weeks leading up to Christmas last year.If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. An official bottling of Glen Keith – the only one in recent years, I believe, unless you count the Chivas Brothers bottlings as officials. As you know the distillery was mothballed in 1999 until they reopened in 2013. It’s called Glen Keith Distillery Edition which is a very nondescript name for a bottling that’s widely available outside of the distillery. Much like the mention ‘distilled by master craftsmen’.It ran triple-distilled malt from the word go and alternated it with double distilled until the 1980s, ran trials with a wheat mash, was the first distillery to use gas-fired direct heating (all its stills are now steam-driven) and in its time also produced heavy peated variants [Glenisla] one made with peat smoke being passed through water which was then concentrated and the other in the normal manner. There were also trials with different yeast types. The fact that the stills were different shapes and sizes helped in these innovative trials. The early 20th century was a tough time for the distillers of Scotland. The industry was enduring a massive downturn even before the First World War and Prohibition came along, add the Great Depression and a second War and you have an impossible situation for even the healthiest of businesses. All over the country distilleries ceased to operate and the Speyside region that once rode the crest of the wave that was the Victorian whisky boom saw its hitherto relentless expansion abruptly halted, then reversed. A fairly new arrival at the time of its inception after a period of slumber for distillery building on Speyside. Previously a flour mill, it is often overlooked in favour of the nearby Strathisla distillery which possesses the fairy tale exterior for any Scottish distillery visitor. Any distillery would be overshadowed by such a nearby glamorous presence. If only those looks matched the whisky it produces, eh? The distillery was mothballed in 1999 and only reopened in 2013 under new ownership after a complete refurbishment. There’ve been really good early 1990s vintages from indie bottlers since, such as this great example by Whisky-Fässle. These types of releases have always made me believe there’s a lot of potential in Glen Keith. Most of the distillery’s output goes towards blends like Chivas, but the malt whisky can really hold its own and given the opportunity could make some waves.
