There is only one town on the island called Darlington. I actually wouldn’t even call it a town as there are no services; only the old convict probation station and historic buildings. When it comes to cleaning your fish for cooking, there is only one shared dishwashing sink at the Darlington camp. It’s a 5.2km return trip along the road or you can do a big circuit to include the Oast House Circuit which is about 6km (see details below). Alesha walking along the Painted Cliffs. Such stunning colours. 7) Oast House WalkIn 2012, rangers released 28 healthy devils on Maria Island so they could thrive and repopulate without risk of the cancer. Located on the east coast of Tasmania, the island is best known for its convict history and scores of animals, including the endangered forty spotted pardalote, Cape Barren Geese, Tasmanian devils and wombats that live there, making it known as Tasmania’s ‘Noah’s Ark’. Maria Island is pretty big, but a lot of the main attractions are centred around the main village of Darlington. Isla María Madre is the largest of the islands, with an area of 145.28km 2 (56.09sqmi). It houses the Islas Marías Federal Prison, which was established there in 1905. The next two largest islands are Isla María Magdalena (70.44km 2[27.20sqmi]) and, further south, Isla María Cleofas (19.82km[12.32mi]). They were named after three women called Mary in the Biblical New Testament: respectively, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and are referred to as the Tres Marias. A smaller island, San Juanito, with an area of 9.1km 2 (3.5sqmi) lies off the north coast of Isla María Madre. Maria Island has been home to explorers, whalers, sealers, convicts, fishermen, farmers and industrialists. This varied influence on Maria Island is still very visible today. On The Maria Island Walk, you’ll wander through forests of magnificent blue and white gums, some of them over 400 years old and unique to Maria Island.

In 2010 the archipelago was designated the Islas Marías Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. [2] [3] Geography [ edit ] Tasmanian devils are a lot harder to see than the wombats, but if you walk around the camps at night you may be fortunate enough to bump into one. They lived in the Oyster Bay nation for over 35,000 years, before being forcibly removed from their land by European settlers from 1789 onwards. You don’t have to go far to see one either. We spotted our first wombat about 3 minutes after stepping off the ferry, and over the course of three days we lost count of how many we actually saw. Some of the hundreds of sea birds that nest here Ground Doves and Zenaidas are found on the scrub covered slopes of Maria Major, while on the steep cliffs on the eastem side of the islands hundreds of sea birds – Terns, Boobies, Noddys, Frigatebirds and Tropic-birds – can be seen. Some of the migratory species cross the Atlantic from the West coast of Africa to come here to nest. For this reason access to the island is restricted from May to July, to ensure a peaceful environment for the nesting birds. We’re going to level with you – the real highlight of any trip to Maria Island is going to be seeing a wombat! After some restorations and of course protection of UNESCO and the Parks and Wildlife service, a number of those buildings still exist today.
