About this deal

Nestling in between Ultimate Guard’s cheapest Supreme sleeves and Ultimate Guard’s premium Katana sleeves, the Cortex offering is an attempted synthesis between quality and value. I played five rounds the next day and the sleeves held up very well. No bends on the corners, still very smooth with little to no dirt buildup (partially because I used a clean playmat! I know a place you can buy the best playmats ever ! 😉) There has been a lot of talk lately about Katana sleeves and how they compare to other sleeves, so I thought I would write this review for the benefit of those who are curious about them. I've basically always used Perfect Fits for my inner sleeves, and have never had an issue. Outer sleeves in general have more variety in my opinion. I appreciate the durability of Dragon Shield, but I know many who swear by the feel of Katanas. To test how well the Cortex sleeves double-sleeve, we combined both the Regular and Matte versions with 100 of 7 different inner sleeves. This means a total of 700 ins and outs for each Cortex variant! That is a lot of sleeving and un-sleeving and a lot of information. The condensed results are as follows:

they are extremely easy to insert into the katana sleeves. KCM is also nice, innersleeve but more for Dragonshild Sleeves. I have heard the Katana are good but I'm not going to toss my old sleeves to change over even if better as the Eclipse are still outstanding. While both the matte and regular versions fall under the same Cortex umbrella, there are significant differences between the two in durability and ease of double-sleeving. That being said, both versions are fit for use and the deciding factor should always be the matte vs shiny finish of the display. The serious players among you will be glad to hear that both Cortex variants are opaque. When held to a bright light, only the silhouette of the cards can be seen, none of the card details or any other incriminating information. We score this a brilliant 8/10, missing only a couple of marks for sleeves that do not even show the silhouette of the card inside. Interestingly, the results for this test differed wildly between the Cortex and Cortex Matte sleeves. For the Matte version, it was incredible and quite possibly the toughest seams we have ever tested. Very few splits occurred and only after an unbelievable amount of force being exerted. This puts the regular Cortex sleeves as one of the easiest to double-sleeve with and the Cortex Matte sleeves as one of the worst we have tested! A stark difference between the two, and with 1 out of every 7 sleeve attempts for the Mattes requiring fixing and fidgeting to succeed, this may be too much of an annoyance for some players. Protect your cards like a Samurai would with our brand-new Katana sleeves! Honoring the tradition of pristine Japanese craftsmanship, these precision-made and extremely durable sleeves are ideal for tournament gameplay. They are fully opaque, great for shuffling and meet the highest standards of players and collectors If you’re new to the game you might wonder why sleeves matter at all, why can’t you just use any brand and type? Quoting the NISEI Organized Play Policies (this had been the same during FFG days, by the way):

Experience a new dynasty of double-sleeving!

I have and always will recommend Dragon shields. They last forever, and the inner sleeves protect all 4 sides of your cards. You talked about how you don't like the space above the cards but I think that's the trade off for pretty much the best protection on the market. Not only this, but there are 2 flavours of Cortex to sink your teeth into - Regular and Matte. Both Cortex versions are available in a standard card size (think Pokemon and Magic the Gathering) as well as a Japanese card game size (Yu-Gi-Oh). I know Dragon Shield sleeves have a large fanbase in the community and I also realize some or maybe even most of the listed solutions are on the higher end of the sleeve price spectrum. Opaqueness isn’t a new issue however and if you ever went to a tournament before, this is something you probably had to handle somehow. Besides, your cards love you (even when they give you agendas instead of ICE) and don’t they deserve some quality, opaque love in return?

Best card Sleeves for playing? : r/pkmntcg - Reddit Best card Sleeves for playing? : r/pkmntcg - Reddit

I just wanted to get some thoughts on Ultimate Guard's Katana sleeves vs. Ultra Pro Eclipse Mattes. I've used the Eclipses and the shuffle feel is great, but they get really grimy easily, even after a thorough hand-washing and playing on playmats, and the corners are already starting to bend a little. The edges seem as though they could catch, scuff and mark the cards. Not as tall as a Dragon Shield (the cut is similar to Ultra Pro Eclipse), so there's no issue of "baconing" on the top edge over time. The thinness of the sleeves means they don't take as much abuse as a Dragon Shield. I'm noticing lots of little dings and dents on my sleeves that I never experienced with Dragon Shields, mostly on the edges. I do have some new Dragon Shield that I use for limited as they are the best sleeves you can get single sleeved and they do fit the double sleeved as well but they do have extra space if I remember right. For sleeves with images , the images will begin to pull away from the sleeve, causing many sleeves to be unusable after that.

Thank you for reading all this, I hope it was worth it and you learned something new about sleeves. I want to finish up with one of the best sleeve themed UFAQ entries of all time: Still, the colors that are available are rich and vibrant. You’ll be happy to look at them as long as there is one you like.

Protect your cards like a Samurai with Ultimate Guard's Katana sleeves! Honoring the tradition of great Japanese craftmanship, these precision-made, top-of-the-line sleeves are fully opaque, extremely durable and will meet the highest standards of players and collectors alike! In this review, we’ll go over the features of Ultimate Guard’s Katana sleeve lineup and analyze how they compare to other card sleeves. The Cortex sleeves are super clear (left & middle), whereas the Cortex Mattes (right) dull the shine and reflections. We consider a fit bad when the card slips out of the inner sleeve while being pushed into the outer sleeve. I c b r g r so using KMC inners and outers has been very good? Do the KMC outer sleeves have that gap above the top of the card like dragon shields do? Thanks for the suggestion as I was heavily considering KMC, so just want to confirm that they are good for double sleeving with their inners and outers :)Whether it's creative input, questions about our products or a complaint - we're always happy to hear from you.
