About this deal

As a relatively straightforward spirit, vodka can be distilled from virtually anything. It’s mostly produced by fermenting potatoes or cereal grains like wheat or rye. The majority of plain vodkas—and almost all Russian vodkas—are created with wheat, while Polish vodka favors rye, and Finnish vodka goes for barley. When vodka is produced using something other than potato or cereal grain, like Ciroc, which is made using grapes, it must legally be declared on the bottle. Or, if you’d rather read up on the spirit first, explore our buyer’s guide to drinking vodka including how it’s madeand the different types available, our tips on how to drink vodka, and the terms to know when buying vodka. 1. Absolut: Overall best vodka Unlike other vodkas, Grey Goose is only distilled once. Best served neat, Grey Goose is one of the original ultra-premium vodkas on the market and offers a delightfully crisp taste with a smooth finish. It’s one of the creamiest vodkas available, with a clear, grainy nose and a peppery palate with a hint of star anise. We hear that vodka is vodka and, since it is largely tasteless, who cares what vodka you use? Well, that is mostly correct. We have tasted many different extracts with many different types of vodka and they truly are quite similar. This makes vodka the perfect kind of spirit to begin with because it's hard to mess up your extract based on the kind of vodka you use. However, we did notice a clear difference in vodkas that have been distilled 5 times and those that have not. We also noticed a difference over time in the top-shelf vodkas vs. the bottom shelf.

Here's why you may want to consider cognac instead of brandy for vanilla extract: If you are conducting experiments on the impact of vanilla beans in different spirits, then you want to hold the spirit constant. A Hennessy cognac from grapes only grown in the Cognac region of France and approved by Hennessy's rigorous tasting standards will provide you a consistent, standard spirit base. Try one with Tahiti beans and one with Mexican beans and you will clearly note the difference in the final extract based solely on the beans. A collectible seasonal GREY GOOSE® Gift Tin and Bottle designed for the giftingseason. Explore Collectible Gift Tin As alcohol has a much lower freezing point than vodka, there’s no need to worry about it getting too cold. Freezing the vodka will remove any harsh flavors and soften the aroma and taste. As we did with the rum, we are going to start with a semi-top shelf bourbon. A common theme that you will see at VanillaPura is quality. When developing a quality extract, you can't overlook the spirit any more than you can overlook the importance of the vanilla bean itself. Woodford Reserve is one of the best bourbons in America. It has dark and smokey undertones, and since it's 51% corn based, it's sweet. But there is something of the sweetness within Woodford Reserve that is special. You can taste caramel, honey and vanilla all within the spirit itself. A Woodford Reserve bourbon extract made with an Indonesian or Mexican bean is the perfect dark chocolate, rich extract for darker desserts and even in BBQ sauces and protein glazes to add a hint of sweetness. Named after the most expensive caviar in the world, it makes sense that Beluga offers top-quality vodka, too. The brand produces its vodka in western Siberia, Russia, using artesian water for the ultimate authentic taste. There are three types of vodka on the market, and the main difference between the three simply boils down to what’s been included during the infusion process or what’s been added after the distillation process. Plain vodka To make vodka, the potato or grain is heated to form a mash before being mixed with yeast to produce ethanol. This fermentation process can take anything from one day to two weeks before the liquid is purified to remove any odors or off-notes. Then, it’s distilled in column stills or pot stills to reach its desired purity.

Indeed, most research concludes that any gluten protein is technically removed from the spirits during the extensive distillation process. Once distilled, Beluga adds honey, milk thistle, and oat to give flavoring before bottling its famous spirit. This super-premium vodka is impressively pure and smooth, with notes of vanilla, sage, white pepper, and cream. While we found this cognac to err more on the smokey side vs. a brandy or a Hennessy, it still proved to be sweet, complex and full bodied on the nose and palate in its finished extract form. It's a wonderful spirit and a less expensive price if you choose to make a go at your first cognac vanilla extract. Mexican, Madagascar or Indonesian vanilla beans are best for this specific spirit. Vodka has kept its title as one of the most popular spirits in the world for many years, which means there are hundreds of different brands to choose from. However, while there are more brands to sample than we could ever reasonably sip, there is a handful that is known for being consistently excellent.

Tasting Notes

Reflecting the taste and freshness of an anjou pear—a classic flavour of French cuisine — this pear flavoured vodka comes alive with a crisp, smooth taste. Explore La Poire Yes, pure distilled vodka (and other distilled spirits like brandy, tequila, rum, whiskey, and gin) is theoretically considered gluten-free, even if made with glutenous grains such as wheat, barley, or rye. We talk about this generally in another article about using different spirits for extract makin g, but we want to get even more specific here. We are going to talk about specific brands of alcohol that we have tried and the different outcomes we have experienced. Vanilla Extract making is all about trial and error, and we have tried and failed a LOT in our experience and we're starting to get pretty good at getting it right. This cognac produces a wonderful vanilla extract. You will notice that we selected the VSOP (not the XO, which is more expensive) for our extract. If you are sipping a cognac like this, you will absolutely be able to tease out the richer notes of an XO over a VSOP, but we didn't think that the additional cost justified the result. Yes, and XO would make a wonderful extract but we didn't think the difference justified the 40%+ additional cost. Proof: Another term for measuring the alcoholic content of a beverage. The proof is double the alcohol by volume (ABV) measurement.

Over the past couple of decades, Grey Goose has established itself as the UK’s top premium vodka brand. It’s been a long time since they’ve deviated from their classic formula, but they recently announced a new flavour — vanilla. Or Grey Goose La Vanille, as it’s been branded, as a nod to its origins in Cognac, France.

But if you enjoy the spirit more when mixed, a range of the best vodka-based drinks can be created with any brand on our list. This attention to detail comes out in full force when it comes to Hangar 1’s Fog Point vodka. Created by the brand’s Head Distiller, it’s a vodka produced using fog catchers around the San Francisco Bay Area that turn the fog into freshwater, before blending with vodka distilled from Napa’s Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier wine.
