Zoë Chao as Zoë Zhu, [10] She was Aniq's high school crush, and following her divorce from Brett, later his girlfriend. Had it not been for my weakness, someone who is now dead could still be alive. That is what I believed and consequently lived with every day in prison." My slight disappointment of the book was the build-up of the title and the blurb to the ‘Party’ in the book. In my opinion, the stress given to what happened in the party was not totally linked to the aftermath. I did enjoy reading about the party, and it was interesting, but I wish the connection was stronger to the following events if it’s seen as a big impact for the rest of the story.

The rest of this psychological thriller follows Lizzie as she tries to help with the investigation. The ending wasn't as surprising as I'd hope, but overall I enjoyed the book. 3 1/2 stars for the story and 4 stars for the narration. I would try another from the author.

The ending of the book was a surprise that actually included a few different twists. It didn’t turn out how I expected and I can’t say that I approved of decisions that were made, but I loved the unexpectedness of how it all came together. Phyllis herself is weak, vacuous, almost simple. She never seems to question whether what she's been told is right, morally right, ethically defensible. Is she a victim? Possibly. Do I feel sympathy for her? Not much. She would possibly be easy enough to chat to over tea, but scratch the surface and her contempt for anyone "other" would be right there. Zoë asks her parents, Feng and Vivian, why they don't want to be questioned. Next to be interrogated is Ulysses, Feng's half-brother and the self-described "funcle" of Grace and Zoë. His retelling of the weekend is told as an epic romance when he reveals that he had a torrid love affair with his own sister-in-law, Vivian, before Grace was born. Feng eventually discovered their secret, prompting Ulysses to travel the world in an attempt to move on with his life. Ulysses stayed distant from Feng and his family until he got a personal visit from Edgar, who wanted Ulysses to attend the wedding. When Edgar suggested that Ulysses could be Grace's biological father, Ulysses chose to attend the ceremony with the intention of confirming Grace's parentage, much to Feng's fury. Despite his personal suspicions, Ulysses ultimately chose to leave the past behind him. After Zoë attempts to force a confession out of Hannah, she realizes that the wedding videographer, Kyler, should have plenty of footage from the previous night that could help pinpoint the killer. Zoë's interrogation is set to a deranged animation. In her story, Zoë's different inner selves attempt to be the more dominant personality. At one point, it is revealed that Jennifer 2 was the one sending Chelsea the anonymous texts. Meanwhile, Aniq and Yasper attempt to eavesdrop on her interrogation, but Yasper's phone is low on battery, so they try to find a charger that is not in use. In their search, they get trapped in a secret room. Culp catches them spying and tells Danner that the police captain has taken her off the case. Otterson, Joe (June 24, 2020). She is a bit of a drunk so it stands to reason she ran off or hurt herself by accident. But the cops are looking at the people in her life. Who did this and why? Will it bring her closer to getting what she wants or taking it away forever?

It also subtly presses against recent trends in NZ On Air-funded series, in a way I want to carefully commend. The cast is largely Pākehā, and a character describes a restaurant as “gay”. I am not, to be clear, suggesting that this is good in and of itself. The push toward greater representation and consciousness of bias in New Zealand productions is manifestly excellent and essential. Yet at times the fact such a large number of our screen communities are perfectly racially blended and confident in their reo can make a show feel like it’s less about reflecting the messy reality of our society than an aspirational window into what we’d like it to be.After the Party is another mesmerising thriller of secrets and lies from the author of The Girl Upstairs.Praise for The Girl Upstairs: a b c Mr. Josh (August 2, 2023).
