About this deal

This recently released book took me out of my usual comfort zone... I braved the ghouls and ghosts especially for you lot so I could review this in time for the witching hour! 🧙 The lodge was almost hidden by over-grown shrubs and the drive was choked with rank growths. Meagle leading, they pushed through it until the dark pile of the house loomed above them. A tramp," was the reply. "He went there for the sake of half-a-crown, and they found him next morning hanging from the balusters, dead." From a writing perspective, I liked that everything was wrapped up satisfactorily. There was no ambiguity and no loose threads that leave you wondering. The duel timeline worked well and slowly revealed the secrets and truth of The Toll House.

The Toll House by Carly Reagon | Goodreads

The Toll House on the edge of the town, now home to Kelda and her son Dylan with a chance to make a fresh start after many difficult years and maybe they can both truly be happy in this new house and move on from their old selves. Carly Reagon completed a six month course at Curtis Brown Creative and wasshortlisted for the Lucy Cavendish College Fiction Prize in 2019. Her writing is inspiredby her love of the Welsh countryside where she lives with her husband and threechildren. She works as a senior lecturer at Cardiff University, is a keen runner andsinger, and has an interest in anything historic. No," said Barnes slowly. "I don't believe in ghosts nor in any supernatural things whatever; all the same, I admit that I should not care to pass a night there alone." Since his death, I have been searching for a replacement or at least someone that could come close to evoking the same fear and genuine thrill. But this review is not about Herbert! One of the most dull, pointless, meaningless stories I ever read. This is not a horror and, while I am not an experienced thriller reader, will gather this isn't really a thriller either. I guess this is more of a mystery, but I never felt intrigued by either timeline, and the 1860s timeline really wore on my nerves by the end. This is also absolutely NOT a gothic tale as what this book intends to say with its themes and messages have nothing remotely gothic about them. The toll house itself is a tiny ass old hut with squeaky floors, and that does not a gothic tale make. What made this book for me were the two timelines – leading up to Kelda and her son being in the house and what the house was like before that. There’s something strange and spooky anyway about tollhouses isn’t there. Someone in a remote house waitng for passing travellers and then taking money from them. A house in the middle of nowhere on a lone country road or close to a bridge. People pass by and never stay…. It's in a good cause," said Meagle. "A most worthy object; and something seems to tell me that we shall succeed. You didn't forget the candles, Lester?"

The Toll House: A thoroughly chilling ghost story to keep you

If there is any it might not be safe to drink after all these years," said Lester. "We must do without it." Lester arose, and, stretching his stiffened limbs, dusted his clothes with his hands and went out into the corridor. White followed. At the noise of their approach a figure which had been lying asleep at the other end sat up and revealed the face of Barnes. "Why, I've been asleep," he said, in surprise. "I don't remember coming here. How did I get here?" If you like a good ghost story put this chilling thriller to the very top of your reading list’ Sarah Pearse author of THE SANATORIUM

I loved the whole dual narrative structure as the story initially opens with Kelda and her son Dylan move into an old toll house - it's certainly a house with some history!
