About this deal

Other areas where the Sony A7 IV achieves 'good enough' status are in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and battery life. Its Active Stabilization mode, which adds a steadying electronic hand to its mechanical IBIS, is certainly decent and helpful for handheld shooting or vlogging. We managed to go down to shutter speeds of around 1/20s, before our micro-jitters started obscuring fine details.

Most of my work is documentary style, also news features, and I work in small crew usually no more than 3 people. The A7R has 36.4MP whereas the A7S has 12.2 megapixels. This is a big difference between the two full frame cameras and highlights the different audiences they target. Sony also has another ‘affordable’ full-frame camera, the A7C, which is a bit more compact. However, its current street price is around the same as the A7 III’s and although it brings a vari-angle screen, in other respects it’s not quite so well specified. Unless you really want a vari-angle screen, we’d recommend going for the A7 III, but if you can afford it, the Sony A7 IV has the best of both worlds.Of course, time and photo tech marches on, and it felt like no time at all before the a7 earned itself an upgrade in the form of the Sony Alpha 7 II. The sequel kept a lot of the components of its predecessor – if it ain’t broke, as they say – but with the principal addition of 5-axis image stabilisation. Designed to reduce image blur by compensating for camera-shake, this system will be familiar to anyone who has used the Olympus OM-D E-M1 or E-M5. By compensating not only for pitch and yaw movements but also vertical, horizontal and rotational movements, the system ensures better stabilisation than any in-lens system could hope to achieve. Both cameras make a good choice for this type of photography and pros are divided about which to opt for. However, the A7 IV wins out for many because of the smaller file size, excellent noise control and more affordable price.

The A7’s image quality is top-class within the limits of its 24-megapixel resolution. Colours are beautifully vibrant, while the scope to customise colour output in camera is very much appreciated. It’s also clear that Sony has thought about how photographers like to work: the breadth of customisation options is fantastic. The A7S, being an old camera, doesn’t have a fast sensor readout compared to more recent models, so these issues will ruin your images if you’re not careful. I advise you to take some test shots if you have doubts. That sensor resolution means the A7S III can’t record 6K video, let alone 8K, instantly putting it behind the Canon EOS R5 on that front. What it can do, however, is record for a very long time. As with the Sony ZV-1, we had no issues recording for in excess of 30 minutes, with the only limiting factors being the card capacity, battery life and heat – and the fact that we never experienced any overheating warnings or issues on the pre-production A7S III we tested bodes well for the final retail unit. As we discovered in the features section above, the Sony A7 IV isn't a true speed demon when it comes to burst shooting. Sony's decision to boost its resolution to 33MP has effectively cancelled out any power gains of its new processor, which means its offers the same 10fps top speed as the A7 III (and that's with compressed raw files). a b c d e "Sony introduces the a7R IV with 61 Megapixel full-frame sensor". Digital Photography Review. 16 July 2019 . Retrieved 16 July 2019.

We tested its burst shooting skills with a UHS-II card and the buffer is more generous than most people will need. When shooting JPEGs, the A7 IV consistently hit speeds of 9fps for over a minute. It also managed the same speeds with raw files for the first eight seconds, dropping down to a still-decent 6-7fps after eight seconds. In both cases, it was heading towards Sony's claimed 828 shots (for CFExpress cards) before our memory card filled up.It has full-sensor readout and can shoot 4K video at up to 120p or full HD footage at up to 240p, with full-sensor readout no pixel-binning and with the hybrid autofocus system in action. Thanks to the much lower number of pixels on the sensor, the A7S can stretch its ISO range from 100 to 102,400 (or 50 to 409,600 with the extended values). Sony has also paired the A7 IV’s sensor with its latest Bionz XR processor, previously seen in the Sony A7S III and Sony A1. This extra processing power enables the A7 IV to have the same native sensitivity range (ISO 100-51,200) despite its hike in resolution.

If you like the idea of a vari-angle screen for vlogging but you’re not sure keen on the A7S III’s price tag, take a look at the Sony A7C. Announced in September last year, it has a first-rate 24Mp full-frame sensor, the Bionz X processing engine and excellent autofocusing capability along with a reasonable video specification. There’s no raw video capability but you shoot high-quality 4K footage in S-Log2 or S-Log3. This premium may lead many photographers and videographers to think twice before hitting the 'buy' button, particularly as lower-powered but impressive alternatives like the Nikon Z5 are less than half the price. With images captured at sensitivities between ISO 2000-4000 looking like they were shot nearer 200-400, the A7S III is a liberating camera to use, and, naturally, you can boost the ISO much higher. Even when we set the ISO in excess of 40,000, it still produced usable footage for certain types of video. For me i can live with that slight loss of DR from iso 100-400 as the DR is still far better then my Canon 5D3. In truth, though, if you’re interested in using an a7-series camera for video then you may want to keep reading, as there’s another camera you’re going to want to meet a little further down the line... The Sony a7R and Sony a7R II Meanwhile, the 42.4Mp A7R III has the same sensor as the A7R II. Both of them resolve more detail than the original A7R which has a 36.4Mp sensor, but they can’t match the A7R IV or A7R V. However, Sony hasn’t given the A7C the A7S III’s revised menu structure or its excellent touch-control. Also as a 0.39-inch type, A7C’s viewfinder is also pretty small for a full-frame camera. The A7R III also feels more rounded than the models that go before it. Its autofocusing system is impressive so it’s even suitable for shooting sport. The very best focusing system, however, is in the A7R V which has 693 phase detection points and the very latest subject detection options which include Human (Right/Left Eye Select) / Animal (Right/Left Eye Select) / Bird / Insect / Car / Train / Airplane, all of which work in stills and video mode.
