For shades over 2kg you need to support the flex by using some lighting chain and therefore need a lampholder with a hook and shade rings to hang your light shade. Then choose between a Bayonet Cap version with shade rings for a shade with a 32mm -35mm hole or an Edison screw version with shade rings for a shade with a 38mm – 45mm aperture. Next you need a ceiling rose with a hook and again some earthed 3 core flex which goes between the lampholder and the ceiling hook. The chain you need is our large link chain. This is sold in max of 10m single length. If your drop is more than that, lengths of chain can be joined using an S hook. Max shade weight is 5kg using a single hook. Or you may be replacing a light fitting that had a wide base than your new fitting or your ceiling has suffered some cosmetic damage whilst removing the old fitting, using a wooden ceiling pattress will, generally, cover a larger area than a ceiling rose meaning that you will not have to re-do your ceiling before installing your new light fitting giving a nice finish to your light fitting.But suspended ceiling pattresses will. These squares of MDF are cut to match the size of a suspended ceiling tile. Cut a hole in the pattress to accept the light, then lay the pattress on top of the ceiling tile. Now, the pattress spreads the weight of the light, protecting the tile, and keeping your ceiling – and your ceiling lighting – looking better for longer. We have some old brass light switches that fit onto round conduit boxes instead of being mounted on a wooden patress. I assume they were fitted when the house was first electrified and the conduit was mostly laid on the surface rather than chased into the walls. I kept the original round conduit boxes mounted on the surface, but took the opportunity of the wall rebuild to hide the power cables. To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced I should have done that as I don't really mind steel conduit and it blends in well enough when suitably painted, plus we have plenty of exposed conduit in other areas of the house and it all looks fine to me. I've even installed some new surface steel conduit in a few places to remain in keeping with the original installation. It's the usual dilemma of true authenticity versus the modern fashion for old things, though as we've discussed before, there are very few people willing to live a truly 'period' lifestyle. :wink:

Each hook can take up to 5kg, you need to fix this securely to your ceiling and as will all items used to install lighting, mirrors etc the product should be weight load tested to ensure it is securely fastened. When wire and in-wall box installation is not an option, get yourself a surface mount box. These boxes house wires and cables so you can safely protect and access them from the wall’s surface.
