From Swansea, M4 to end, A483 and then A40 through Llandeilo to Llandovery. Otherwise head west on the A40 from Abergavenny through Brecon to get there from the east Llandovery ( / l æ n ˈ d ʌ v r i/; Welsh: Llanymddyfri [ɬanəmˈðəvrɪ]) is a market town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It lies on the River Tywi and at the junction of the A40 and A483 roads, about 25 miles (40km) north-east of Carmarthen, 27 miles (43km) north of Swansea and 21 miles (34km) west of Brecon. The design of the statue, by Toby and Gideon Petersen, was chosen after a national competition. It was funded by the National Lottery and the Arts Council of Wales.

Like many local farmers Rhodri is now part of the growing tourism sector. With his wife Carys, he runs Gelli Glamping further down the Tywi Valley. The name of the town derives from Llan ymlith y dyfroedd, meaning "church enclosure amid the waters", i. e. between the Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence. A smaller watercourse, the Bawddwr, runs through and under the town. This magnificent, manmade dam is Britain’s highest dam at an impressive 91 metres tall and had super scenic surroundings. Unwind in their converted, self-catering cottage that is fully equipped with everything you need for a countryside break. Pop a few logs on the fire and relax in cosy surroundings. Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.Jones, Selwyn. "Rees, Rice (1804–1839), cleric and scholar". Dictionary of Welsh Biography. National Library of Wales. It’s a historic market town at the northern edge of Carmarthenshire and on the Western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Llandovery is also a gateway town to the picturesque Cambrian mountains.

The nearby Penygawse Tea Rooms is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. Here, the welcome is as warm as their famous toasted panini's. Enjoy the triple cooked chips and the tiffin, though it’s best not to have them together! You can then spend a few hours exploring the kooky town of Llanwrtyd Wells, the home of Bog snorkelling in Wales. A Llandovery Golf Club, founded in 1910, survived until the onset of the Second World War. [9] Golfing now takes place on the Llandovery College 9-hole course. [10] Governance [ edit ] In the small central market place stands Llandovery Town Hall (1857–1858) by the architect Richard Kyke Penson. This was designed in the Italianate style with a courtroom over an open market. Behind are police cells with iron grilles; entry to the old courtroom (now a library) is via a door on the ground floor of the tower. [4] It’s particularly loved by day-trippers and walkers and you will see many of them on board, clutching walking poles and thermos flasks. Watch out for the spectacular viaduct crossing at Cynghordy!

The Roman fort at Llanfair Hill to the north-east of the modern town was known to the Romans as Alabum. It was built around AD 50–60 as part of a strategy for the conquest of Wales. A Roman road heads across Mynydd Bach Trecastell to the south-east of Llandovery bound for the fort of Brecon Gaer. Another heads down the Towy valley for Carmarthen, whilst a third makes for the goldmines at Dolaucothi. The town is home to a thriving community and plays host to many different events throughout the year including a Carnival, the Sheep Festival and Motobike Festival Weekend. Llandovery boasts a doctor’s surgery and hospital and a superb primary school with a public swimming pool and a brand new open-to-all leisure centre facility. It is also home to Llandovery College, an independent school that has supplied and is still supplying a number of great players to the Welsh national rugby team. It really is an impressive skill to bring dark and eerie caves to life. The guides managed to paint a picture of life underground and the hardships and challenges miners would have faced. This charming market town is well-positioned to explore the surrounding national parks, hiking trails, waterfalls and the breathtaking Welsh landscapes. Following all those outdoor exertions, refreshment is needed, and Rhodri tells us that, Llandovery once had more inns per head than anywhere else. This plethora of pubs results from the towns heritage as a drovers town. It’s thought that there were over 100 in the town during the 1700s. Many remain to this day, and because this is farming country you can now enjoy locally sourced fayre along with the craft ales.
