A bagad is a Breton band, composed of bagpipes, bombards and drums. The musicians are travelling from their hometown of Pluguffan in Brittany and will be joined by Côr Meibion Llanymddyfri. Together they will perform a collection of traditional Breton and Welsh music. Contributions should be travel related. The Roman fort at Llanfair Hill to the north-east of the modern town was known to the Romans as Alabum. It was built around AD 50–60 as part of a strategy for the conquest of Wales. A Roman road heads across Mynydd Bach Trecastell to the south-east of Llandovery bound for the fort of Brecon Gaer. Another heads down the Towy valley for Carmarthen, whilst a third makes for the goldmines at Dolaucothi. The town is home to a thriving community and plays host to many different events throughout the year including a Carnival, the Sheep Festival and Motobike Festival Weekend. Llandovery boasts a doctor’s surgery and hospital and a superb primary school with a public swimming pool and a brand new open-to-all leisure centre facility. It is also home to Llandovery College, an independent school that has supplied and is still supplying a number of great players to the Welsh national rugby team. It really is an impressive skill to bring dark and eerie caves to life. The guides managed to paint a picture of life underground and the hardships and challenges miners would have faced. This charming market town is well-positioned to explore the surrounding national parks, hiking trails, waterfalls and the breathtaking Welsh landscapes. This plethora of pubs results from the towns heritage as a drovers town. It’s thought that there were over 100 in the town during the 1700s. Many remain to this day, and because this is farming country you can now enjoy locally sourced fayre along with the craft ales.
