About this deal

United Biscuits immediately transferred some Carlisle production to a factory in Liverpool, with the loss of 80 jobs. However the Carlisle factory escaped closure, in part, due to its excellent labour relations, which were in themselves a valuable asset. J D Carr died in 1884, and he was formally succeeded by his three sons, Henry Carr (1834 -1904), James Carr (1838 – 1901) and Thomas Carr (1840 – 1895). Carr's business was both a mill and a bakery, an early example of vertical integration, and produced bread by night and biscuits by day. [3] The biscuits were loosely based on dry biscuits used on long voyages by sailors. [3] They could be kept crisp and fresh in tins, and despite their fragility could easily be transported to other parts of the country by canal and railway. [3]

My circles didn’t turn out very well so I ended up just cutting the dough which had a much better result (this is where you’d use the pizza cutter). Henry Carr was appointed chairman of the business. A deeply spiritual man, he had a greater inclination towards religion than commerce. However he was determined to show that he was worthy of the legacy left him by his father. He ventured upon an ambitious expansion of the biscuit factory, almost doubling its productive capacity in 1891.Flour – just regular plain flour (also called all purpose flour). You can also use spelt flour if you want to make them a little more nutritious. The Maldon mill is the smallest and most flexible of the Carr’s mills. It is located on the banks of the River Chelmer, in Maldon Essex where it has been since 1896. It is located in the heart of one of the finest wheat growing regions in the UK and as a result 70% of the wheat is locally sourced within 30 miles of the mill. Theodore Carr was a hands-on chairman. He had developed the Table Water biscuit in 1890, which soon became the signature product for the business. It was a variant of the Captain’s Thin, a Victorian staple which was itself derived from the ship biscuit. The Table Water biscuit was thinner and crisper than any biscuit before it, and paired particularly well with cheese. Moderately active - Do light to moderate intensity exercise 3-4 times a week. E.g. going to the gym / swimming / cycling / horse riding / dance classes / playing golf. Daily dog walking (brisk pace, twice a day). a b c d Brendon, Piers (11 October 1997).
