About this deal

All 142 screening services submitted data, and all of them reached the achievable threshold of 99%. Identified babies are those with a confirmed diagnosis of one or more of the following serious cardiac anomalies occurring in isolation: Key performance indicator ( KPI) data reports are available for all 11 national screening programmes. Denominator: number of women for whom a higher chance result (from the combined or quadruple test) is received by the maternity service in the reporting period. We highlight some changes here but the full list of changes can be found in the supporting information.

There is no intention to publish FA3 by individual maternity service. We are reviewing the data with the aim of publishing it nationally in the future. FASP defines the national cut-off set at 1 in 150 at term for both first and second trimester screening tests. A woman with a result of 1 in 150 or greater (between 1 in 2 and 1 in 150), of having a pregnancy with T21, T18, T13 in the first trimester, or T21 only in the second trimester, is considered to be in the ‘higher chance’ group and offered an invasive diagnostic test. A sample can be tested for T21 only, T18 and T13 only, or all 3 conditions depending on the woman’s choice. A single repeat scan must be offered and completed by 23 weeks plus 0 days. The woman can be rescanned on the same day and if the scan is still incomplete, a new appointment should be offered according to local guidelines. The 20-week screening scan can be completed between 18 weeks and 0 days and 23 weeks plus 0 days weeks of pregnancy. For women between at or after 22 weeks plus 0 days and before or at 23 weeks plus 0 days, every effort must be made to accommodate the offer of the screening scan and they should be included in the denominator. In cases where the service is unable to offer the screening scan, they can be excluded. Individuals who are not SRA-authorised need to register on mySRA before you send in your application. Numerator: number of women referred locally and seen on or before 3 working days of the screening scan.

We have not set thresholds for the achievable levels yet. We’ll keep the data under review and look to set achievable thresholds in the future. FASP-S07: referral: timeliness to information and support (T21/T18/T13)We have updated these standards in line with our national approach to setting screening standards and they will be valid for data collected from 1 April 2022. Hopefully this gives you lots of time to look at the standards and prepare for any changes before data collection starts.

We recommend ultrasound practitioners performing the 20-week screening scan should complete the fetal cardiac e-learning resource every 24 months. Timely referral (local and tertiary as clinically appropriate) when an anomaly is suspected or confirmed.

Summary of changes

The eligibility criteria for entry into the combined screening pathway is a baby’s CRL measurement between 45.0mm and 84.0mm. This is equal to 11 weeks plus 2 days to 14 weeks plus 1 day of pregnancy. In both FASP-S01 (coverage: T21/T18/T13 screening) and FASP-S02 (coverage: 20-week screening scan) we have made changes to the exclusion category.
