About this deal

One of the great things about the LG Gram is that I was able to put Ubuntu on the machine, which I prefer to mac os, for coding. It seems to work well although like a lot of laptops battery life seems worse for linux. That's not the manufacturers fault just less polished drivers etc I guess. But that's pretty universal for all laptops. On this regular Gram 16, fresh air comes inside through the bottom of the laptop, through the punctured intake grill. However, that intake grill is only partially open over the CPU and is covered over the fan and the heatpipe, in an effort to channel the air over the CPU, into the fan, and then out through the exhaust grill. LG updated the fonts that they’re using for this generation, and the smaller writing is more visually pleasant imo. For biometrics, there’s no longer a figner-sensor integrated within the power button with this 2022 Gram 16 generation, as on the previous models, which instead has been replaced by an IR-capable camera. Having both would have been nice. Screen

An RTX 2050 dGPU is also available on some variants of this laptop, and I expect that to come with an updated cooling module, so I can’t judge its capabilities based on this iGPU-only unit. As far as the competition goes, there’s the Gram 17 already mentioned, and the Acer Swift Edge, another lightweight 16-inch laptop. That’s built on AMD Ryzen U hardware, which I know some of you will love, but it’s also a low-power design with minimalist cooling, and it gets a 4K OLED screen and a 56 Wh battery. You’ll find all about it in our review. BTW, there’s also an OLED available in the updated 2023 LG Gram, though. Gaming laptops have been evolving very well to enable the same level of productivity to replace desktop PCs when plugged in on a desk, but when it comes to laptops meant for mobility, the vast majority of them just fall short of their price tag.There turned out to be an acceptable amount of volume (84dB average at 1m from a pink noise source and 87dB peak from a music source at the same distance) and even a reasonable amount of bass, certainly more than the old 2021 model produced. Balance and definition are good, too. I really was genuinely surprised by the quality of the sound that the LG Gram 16 (2022) produces. The LG Gram 16 gets a basic thermal module with a single fan and a short heatpipe, just like all the other Gram notebooks. Samsung’s Galaxy Book2 Pro offers some direct competition thanks to an even more impressive all-up weight of just 1.1kg. Even the Galaxy Book2 Pro 360, which is the fully convertible version, only weighs 1.4kg in 15.6in form. All these negative aspects generally result from the fanatical struggle of marketers (and therefore engineers) with the weight of a laptop (this is a Gram series). A sturdy case with a magnesium alloy frame to support the motherboard and case strength (like the Thinkpad T+ series) will drastically add weight. A better cooling system (+1-2 massive heatpipes, bigger cooler and heatsinks) will drastically increase the weight. You complain about small speakers – big ones will add weight. Large battery (with no real fundamental progress in batteries) – will increase the weight drastically. Even +2 memory slots and a second M.2 (which might be placed near battery) will add weight. That is, all the shortcomings of this series stem from a key advantage – low weight.

On to more demanding loads, we start by testing the CPU’s performance in the Cinebench R15 loop test. The 2020 LG Gram 17 was a great laptop but the 2021 model is even better. LG has made small improvements everywhere you look while doing nothing to undermine the attraction of the original. This design particularity is the reason thermals are not significantly improved when placing the laptop on a raiser stand, as I believe they would if the fan would have been allowed unrestrained air access through the intake grill. Compared to the previous-generation Gram built on an 11th-gen Core i7-1165G7 processor, this 2022 model is a major step up in CPU performance, and only a minor upgrade in GPU capabilities. The faster CPU makes a difference both with daily use and multitasking, but also with occasional intensive loads. The LG Gram 17 gets a basic thermal module with a single fan and a short heatpipe, much like all the other past Gram.W (~9+ h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Optimal + Balanced Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
