PIGEON - PIG iron, also known as crude iron, is an intermediate product of the iron industry. EON=age.EPONYM - ME reversed around PONY (25 quid); the vacuum cleaner is named after Mr Hoover (not J Edgar) Nothing is going right and I cannot see a way forward with this. I predicted on Wednesday that I would be broken by the end of the week, and so it proved. ERRED – ER (our late, lamented Queen) and RED (the Queen in Through the Looking Glass was the Red Queen, not to be confused with the Queen of Hearts, who appeared in the earlier book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland). Since I've been following the elections in the US, Australia and the recent ones in France and the UK, 21 across is one of my favorite clues in a long time, well put setter!

A 90 minute DNF as I couldn’t get HAILSTONE. Saw STONE and still couldn’t get it. That is off the scale incompetence!!! MEGALITHIC - An &lit, constructed as follows: A GEM (prized stone set up, ie MEG A) + LIT(erally) + HIC, Latin for "This." The Prize Jumbo Cryptic Crossword is like the daily crossword but bigger and better. The crossword grid used for Saturday is 23×23 and the players have a chance to play their favorite crossword for a much longer time.CARP– I think this is a double definition. I tried to convince myself that ‘grouse’ and ‘beef’ make this a triple, but they are basically the same meaning of ‘carp’, to complain. AVIEMORE - A MORE=an extra, around VIE=challenge. I couldn't see it and didn't know the place, so had to look it up.

UNCHASTE - UNC(l)E replaces L='a bit' of Lunch, by HAS + T. I don't like the use of 'a bit' to mean 'the first letter'. I don't see where that comes from. informal café session at the annual Cheltenham Literature Festival. There, the Northern Ireland native helps On Saturdays there is also a Prize Jumbo cryptic, similar in style to the daily puzzle but using a 23x23 grid. Did you think the definition was just problem. If so, Wurm might say “gotcha”. STAR{e} (look hard for) [missing English - e]. 'Stare meaning 'look hard' is fine but I'm having a problem equating it with 'look hard for'. Perhaps there's a context I haven't thought of? RESECT - not 100% sure, but I think this is REST (support, as in snooker) with EC (City of London, hence financial centre) inserted. The fact that Richard Rogan is a true crossword puzzle aficionado is also evident from the fact that he runs the

No fewer than four double definitions (DDs) here and plenty of deletion too, certainly contributory factors to making this a rather easy offering. Only the papal mini-bull held me up to any extent, but even that was pretty tractable. As a bull - of whatever size - should be. RED ALERT– RED (ginger) ALE (beer) RT (right). Fun surface.
