It's almost a year since DCI Kate Daniels discovered a brutal double murder, a murder that she failed to solve. The murder of a man on Newcastle's Quayside gives Daniels her first case as Senior Investigating Officer however there's a problem - Daniels recognises the corpse and must decide whether or not to reveal all to her superiors. Daniels is described as an officer with an exemplary career, certainly one that doesn't need to 'prove' anything you would assume, so I did wonder just what would happen in the story regarding her keeping this secret. Typically when an officer keeps something quiet in crime fiction it works one of two ways: in their favour, or exceptionally bad. The court heard Mr Wall used tablets and cannabis but was working to reduce his drug use and was about to begin a course to become a holiday rep. But, when Alan Stephens is murdered, a man familiar to Kate, she has to decide if she should tell her superiors about having prior knowledge of the victim, or keep that to herself so she can stay on the case and further her career. For me, a bit part in someone else's drama wasn't good enough for her. Madsen was found guilty of premeditated murder, aggravated sexual assault and desecrating a corpse, and given a life sentence. He always claimed he was innocent, and that there was no sexual motive. However during an interview for a TV documentary in September 2020, Madsen admitted to killing Kim, saying: “It’s my fault she died. And it’s my fault because I committed the crime. It’s all my fault.
