About this deal

A fiercely poetic literary debut re-creating the life of an 19th-century slave woman in South Africa.Slavery as it existed in Africa has seldom been portrayed?and never with such texture, detail, and authentic emotion. Inspired by actual 19th-century court records, Unconfessed is a breathtaking literary tour de force. They called her Sila van den Kaap, slave woman of Jacobus Stephanus Van der Wat of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. A woman moved from master to master, farm to farm, and?driven by the horrors of slavery to commit an unspeakable crime?from prison to prison. A woman fit for hanging . . . condemned to death on April 30, 1823, but whose sentence the English, having recently wrested authority from the Dutch settlers, saw fit to commute to a lengthy term on the notorious Robben Island. Sila spends her days in the prison quarry, breaking stones for Cape Town?s streets and walls. She remembers the day her childhood ended, when slave catchers came ?whipping the air and the ground " They’re dating now,” I explained, answering his earlier question just in case I hadn’t been clear before. The premise of this book was NOT ok. Clearly that’s a personal opinion before people jump to strangle me. You who don’t share my opinion have clearly rated this book higher. Sure. It’s not safe for you to walk around the park this early in the morning, so be careful in the future.”

Love seeing how they slowly build up their relationship, falling into their adorable daily routine, standing up up for each other in times of need and slowly started falling for each other. It was all so beautiful to watch. The chemistry, tension, connection is off charts! I loved how they didn't jump to bed the first second they meet. Instead I enjoyed seeing them develop a special connection and fall in love. She eyed the seat across from me but didn’t sit down. “Can I get you anything before I do that? Coffee? Tea?”I got it! I got it!” I yelled a little too enthusiastically over my shoulder, holding the ring up as if I had won a trophy. When I saw the unimpressed expressions around me, I felt my cheeks turn a bright shade of red. I dropped my arm, closed my eyes, and released a very long sigh.

Rose, you’re going to have to be more specific. I told you, you have a million things to say about our marriage all the time. Start with one of them. Tell me about the marriage you wanted to have.” It’s been a little bit over a year now since I’ve published a new novel, so that means I’m ready for you guys to meet the two characters I’ve been so in love with for quite some time now. The few times I glanced up to see if she was avoiding me or was simply busy, my eyes lingered on her, causing me to lose my train of thought. She always looked so lively, so vivacious and confident. In between customers, her eyes slid my way. I held her gaze to see what she’d do, but she managed to act as if I wasn’t even there. I reached for his hand to put on his wedding band, but call it nerves, clumsiness, or a sign, if you will—before I could even touch his hand, the cheap, thin ring slipped from my shaky fingers and I watched it fly away from me in slow motion. After the surprisingly loud clinking sound it made when it hit the floor, I ran after it, apologizing to no one in particular, and had to drop to my knees so I could save it before it rolled under the ugly orange couch. Although the light blue dress I had chosen to wear was by no means short, I still had to put one of my hands on my butt to cover myself so I wouldn’t flash everyone as I caught the damn thing before I had to crawl on my knees.I raised my hand and stopped him before he could go on with his sentence. “Wait a minute, if you’re telling me you think Titanic or You’ve Got Mail was cheesy, we have a problem.”

Yikes. Okay, what else…what else…honeymoon couple. Dammit, we just fought, so that doesn’t work for us. Next, whining couple—nope. Always together couple…I mean…” She looked at me under her lashes, but neither one of us made a comment. “The rest is crap.” She put her phone down. “Anything specific you want to be?” I like spending time with you, and I like the idea of you coming to my office to have lunch. I like it when people see me with you.” slowburn pining with brief moments of intimacy has to be my fave trope. and for it to be done well??For two strangers who had met and gotten married roughly a month and a half ago, we had fallen into a routine faster than I’d expected. Day after day, I found myself helping Rose at her coffee shop. Even when I didn’t intend to drop by, or let’s say even when I knew I shouldn’t drop by, I still found myself on her doorstep. I’d lost count of how many times I’d lied and said I had a meeting nearby or found other convenient lies. I don’t think she believed them anymore. Maybe I needed the lies for my own sake.

I reached for his hand to put on his wedding band, but call it nerves, clumsiness, or a sign, if you will—before I could even touch his hand, the cheap, thin ring slipped from my shaky fingers and I watched it fly away from me in slow motion.

Guilt was a very strong opponent to go to war with, and I couldn’t seem to shake myself out of the funk I was in. When you added ex-fiancés into the mix… Based on the medical screening certificate, application for marriage may be denied if one of the parties suffers from a: I heard Owen mutter something from the kitchen as his head poked out from the doorway behind me. “Sally? Did you say something?” We are going to make a conscious effort to work on our marriage no matter what’s going on in our lives. We will keep working on it, always. I want to make you happy, and you have to talk to me.”
