About this deal

The second major storyline collected in this hardcover is Frank Miller's 1993 return to Daredevil - the Daredevil: Man Without Fear 5-issue limited series. Miller, ably aided by John Romita Jr. serves up a dramatic and definitive retelling of Daredevil's origin, including his early encounters with the Kingpin and Elektra. This was the series that made me a Daredevil fan, so it's nice to see it collected in such a deluxe format. Daredevil: Cage Match (2010) #1: See Guide to Luke Cage. This is a retcon story of an early meeting between Daredevil and Luke Cage and has always been collected with Cage material rather than Daredevil material. Lee was initially concerned that the idea of his new hero might be offensive to blind people, but was overwhelmed by the positive response from charities working with the blind! See The Men Without Fear documentary for more detail. Collects (1964) #333-344. Also collects Elektra: Root of Evil #1-4, the present day material of which follows #337. Before Frank came on, there were so many different pencillers assigned to the book because DAREDEVIL was bimonthly at that point and really on life support in a lot of ways. There were a lot of rotating pencillers and…my job was to keep the book looking consistent. And when Frank came on, nobody really expected him to stay on for as long as he did because the pencillers usually would do two issues or three issues and then hop off, but when Frank came on there was definitely a shift in terms of the level of commitment.

World War Hulk: Daredevil appears in some of the street-level stories of this event during #93-94, including Front Line #2-6 and Damage Control #1-3. See Marvel Universe Events: World War Hulk Daredevil: Yellow A four-issue mini-series re-examining the origins of Daredevil, but with some present-day references. Avengers Disassembled: Daredevil appears in Avengers #501-503. See Marvel Universe Events: Avengers DisassembledThis is essentially a hodge podge of Miller's _other_ Daredevil work, but with its inclusion of Born Again, Man Without Fear, and (to a lesser extent) Love and War, it remains a must-read, definitely worthy of being right next to the main Miller omnibus. An eight-issue, out-of-continuity mini-series by Bendis that sees his run through one potential alternate conclusion. Also available in hardcover.

Kingpin #1-5: Vol. 1: Born Again– This fits prior to Secret Empire for Matt, likely after issue #21. Collects: Daredevil: Ninja 1-3; Daredevil/Spider-Man 1-4; Daredevil (1998) 20-25, 51-55; Spider-Man/Daredevil 1

Frank Miller's return to the character after wrapping up his initial run 2 years prior. This is a really cool one-off story drawn by the seminal John Buscema. The story is pretty simple, and the narration is a tad overdone. Very hefty crime noir text, Miller trying to channel his inner Raymond Chandler. He'd perfect this style of story later on with his Sin City books. It's a treat to have Miller and Buscema working together! This is one of the most highly-collected creator runs in Marvel history. However, no run of TPBs collect it as succinctly as this grouping of Omnibuses. Even the ostensibly same “Daredevil by Miller & Janson” line, below, does not exactly duplicate the contents of the two main Daredevil Omnibus volumes – they omit the Man Without Fear mini and #226-233

Anne Nocenti’s run on Daredevil was one of the first by a female writer on a major Marvel character, and also regarded by fans with nearly as much reverence as Miller’s preceding run.oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-0785126768 / 2016 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-0785195382 / 2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302957650 / digital TBA) During #36: Alias #14-15 (these issues explain who Jessica Jones becomes Daredevil’s co-bodyguard with Luke Cage) During #38: Daredevil: The Target (a single issue of an aborted Daredevil series by Kevin Smith) By 2011 Daredevil had been put through the wringer for a decade with no sign of lighthearted superhero adventures in sight. Comic superstar Mark Waid took over the title with the idea that Daredevil had reached so many unimaginable lows over the past 13 years of comics that the only direction he could go was up.

If you ask me, it’s hard to even conceive a better superhero than Daredevil. He’s got it all, and just in the right amount: Supernatural skills that essentially fall short compared to the set of skills he’s acquired through hard work and discipline, yet enough hot-headedness to screw up said hard work and discipline, a childhood trauma on top of another childhood trauma, plenty of brooding to last him five lifetimes and enough moral ambiguousness to save him from being disgustingly good. So much drama! Such tension! And his (new) costume is really cool, too. Axis: See Marvel Universe Events: Axis. Daredevil appears briefly in Axis, but also continues to intersect with Iron Man’s solo stories as part of the event.

This issue starts with young Miller experimenting with one of his future tropes: narration by tv screens! A classic superhero run with fluid and well framed action, tight storylines, and some surprisingly tactful characterization. Next is the Born again storyline and the prelude issues before it. Ive heard nothing but great things about this specific story from everyone ive heard from and its true. This story is brilliant, it shows kingpin at his worst, destroying daredevils life bit by bit. (5/5) After #368: Kazar, Vol. 4 #8. A fter #370: Uncanny X-Men #351, Amazing Spider-Man #429. After #371: Thunderbolts #10, Spider-Man/Kingpin: To the Death, Marvel Knights Double Shot #1/2, Elektra #12-13 After #375: Spider-Man – Made Men After #380: Cable #55, Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1998. After #379: Nighthawk (1998) #1-3.
