About this deal

a) Prior to application for further attempts after the fifth attempt a candidate must: Discuss their final attempt and suitability for anaesthetic training with their college tutor or equivalent. Their college tutor or equivalent must support a further attempt in writing through the submission of the ‘Additional Educational Training form; AET Form1’ at Appendix 8. The form must be submitted to the Director of Education, Training and Examinations at least three months in advance of the date of the next intended sitting. Final examinations are aligned to the core and intermediate levels of the UK anaesthetic training curriculum. The questions used in the examinations are tagged to the FRCA Primary and Final examinations syllabuses. Passing the Final examination allows candidates to progress to high level training. Successful completion means that candidates become Fellows of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and can use the letters FRCA after their name. Preparing for the Final FRCA exams Conducts appropriate pre-assessment of patients with respect to sedation, understands patient related risk factors, and plans accordingly The CRQ paper assesses the mandatory areas of training. These areas may appear as stand-alone questions or as part of a question, for example pain management within a perioperative case. In addition to specific knowledge-based competences, examination material may be developed from guidance or recommendations published by healthcare organisations. The public expects doctors to keep up-to-date with important developments and such material may be examined under the collective umbrella of ‘professionalism’. b) Details of examination practice for the relevant component (e.g. OSCE, SOE practice, or MCQ practice etc).

g) A pass in the Primary FRCA Examination does not automatically entitle eligibility to apply for the Final FRCA. Each part comprises two clinical short cases, each with a linked clinical science question. The clinical science question may come before or after the clinical short case.
