About this deal

If a ball is too soft it won’t be able to release trigger points which require a lot of intense pressure. If a ball is too hard it may be too painful to use. Even atheists should be familiar with the Bible & every professional should have a copy of these books, despite theirflaws. Top physical therapists, massage therapists and athletes all use massage balls for their own self-care and most use lacrosse balls for massage.

Can a good enough massage therapist remove all trigger points in a session? Is there such a thing as a “trigger point whisperer”? The smaller and harder the ball, the more pressure you can apply to the trigger points. The more pressure, the better the release of tension. But at the same time, of course, this means that working the affected area of the body is very painful. During a minor cyst removal from my chest many years ago, a potent stab of hot pain made me jump under the knife. “Very sorry,” the surgeon said. “I slipped and poked your pectoralis major with my scalpel, and only the superficial tissue is anaesthetized. Don’t worry, it won’t happen again.” And it didn’t. But I had learned a useful lesson: muscle tissue is sensitive stuff! 17Muscle just hurts sometimes. Trigger points can cause pain directly. Trigger points are a “natural” part of muscle tissue. 23 Just as almost everyone gets some pimples, sooner or later almost everyone gets muscle knots — and then you have some pain with no other explanation or issue.

More info: Added some context about trigger point therapy as a “modality” to introduce the section. [Updated section: Types of therapists and doctors and their relationship to trigger point therapy.] They don’t contain all the answers — indeed, they contain some nonsense — but anyone who claims to treat muscle pain should still have the big red books in their office. They are too historically important not to be familiar with. If you don’t see dog-eared copies of these books, ask about them — it’s a fair, polite clue about a therapist’s competence. Muscle Pain (the blue one) is just as important. I recommend it to any professional who works with muscle (or should). It’s more recent, and it covers a much wider range of soft tissue pain issues, putting trigger points in context. Now that I’ve discussed the basic features you should be looking for in a massage ball, I’ll review the top massage balls on the market, based on price, ease of use, and overall customer satisfaction. For example, if you feel your calves are tight you can use a massage ball to ‘release’ the tightness in the muscle, followed by stretching. Whilst this ball may not be as essential as the others, for its low price it’s worth having in any case.Jun 17, 2023 — New content: Added an interesting sidebar about how we can actually lose sarcomeres. And I finally added two very complex new diagrams of muscle structure and sarcomere function — a project I avoided for years, because it was really hard! But also very important for this subject matter. [Updated section: Micro muscles and the dance of the sarcomeres.] Correction: I excessively demonized gabepentin and pregabalin based on an oversimplification of their legal history and inadequate attention to the evidence on efficacy for neuropathy. In fact, these drugs are efficacious for some neuropathies. [Updated section: Nerve pain is overdiagnosed.] In some cases, a physiotherapist will even demonstrate to his or her patient how to use a lacrosse ball to treat muscle pain.

A trigger point is a spot that is sensitive to pressure, mainly in muscle tissue, and often associated with aching and stiffness. 12 13 Almost everyone gets these spots, like pimples, but some people get more of them, and more painful ones, and no one really knows what they are. They have had many names over the decades, 14 but myofascial triggerpoint ( TrP) is the trendiest and most widely accepted label in the last 20 years. Trigger appeared in the first episode and continued to appear regularly throughout the entire show's run. He is an example of a breakout character in that he became popular with the show's audience, despite his status as a minor, supporting character. If you don't have a fascia roller yet, I can give you the Trueball massage ball recommend. Unlike other models, it is made of cork and therefore much more pleasant to the skin.

Every one of those points is the tip of an iceberg. The devil is in the details, and that’s why there’s a very large book about them behind the paywall. But this summary should help give you a better sense of whether or not you want to learn more from this source. The daily clinical experience of thousands of massage therapists, physical therapists, and physicians strongly indicates that most of our common aches and pains — and many other puzzling physical complaints — are actually caused by trigger points, or small contraction knots, in the muscles of the body.

Too advanced. Although I work hard to “dumb” the material down, quite a few people still just find it too dense and dorky. I hope you have enjoyed learning how to use a trigger point ball. What are your favorite trigger point therapy ball exercises? I’d love to hear how you get on with these exercises so please do leave a comment in the box below! With apologies to my international readers, this section is mostly American-o-centric. If you are aware of important resources and organizations elsewhere in the world, please let me know. Some practitioners use dry needling to treat trigger points in the muscles. There are also various trigger point tools available that you may have even used at your local gym, which we’ll get to shortly. You may also have heard of massage guns, which work via a technique called percussive therapy.About repeated citations: If I have already used a citation in footnote, I will mostly just link to that paper on subsequent references, especially if they are closely spaced. But if I am repeating it much further along and/or in a different context, I’ll give it another footnote and use op. cit. (“in the work already cited”). What are trigger points?
