Of the many pleasures in King Kong, it’s worth noting that casting Charles Grodin as your villain is the best idea you could ever have in 1976.
Although a bit problematic, what’s here isn’t enough to soften the many positives found throughout the presentation.King Kong didn’t roar quite loud enough for people to care in 1976, but it holds up rather well as an oft-ironic piece of blockbuster entertainment.
When the curtain goes up, it reveals (to the gasps of the audience) a Kong who seems depressed and lethargic. I even think the lengthy amount of time Jackson invests in developing his characters and creating the time period at the start just about pays off, even though there may have been more economical ways to get us to the same level of emotional investment if only Jackson had bothered to look for them. But less believable is the crew's mission to save her - 17 violent spinning deaths later, one wonders if perhaps those Weta whizzkids don't share Jackson's obvious adoration for humankind.
No one knows what they will encounter on this island and why it is so mysterious, but once they reach it, they will soon find out. The Art Galleries – Again, the same material as the previously-released DVD, the artwork has not changed.
