About this deal

The delicate operation of transferring very young seedlings from the container where they were sown to another container where they will have more room to grow. In addition, texture will differ depending on whether stacked, rotted turf is used or whether the source is an arable field. John Innes No 3 contains the highest levels of fertilizer and is suitable for mature plants growing in pots, such as shrubs, small trees, perennials, and conifers. A peat free blend that is developed specially for the needs of all young plants to help them establish.

K) Potassium to assist water regulation and help maintain turgor pressure of the cells, increasing structural strength thereby helping to keep the plant from wilting.

With all the composts, supplementary feeding using liquid feeds can be carried out once plants are well established in their pots - usually 6-8 weeks after potting when the roots are through to the sides of the pot. Stem cuttings need to be in a moist environment out of direct sunlight until they have rooted so either place in a cold frame, a covered propagator or cover with polythene, using supports to prevent the polythene from touching the cuttings. Sylvagrow peat free John Innes Seed Compost is ideal for seed sowing, encouraging germination, healthy root growth, and the propagation of cuttings. John Innes No2 is used for potting on young plants and Westland John Innes No3, which has the most nutrients, is best used for final potting up of plants.

John Innes potting media, or composts, are widely sold and offer significant advantages over soil-free potting media due to the weight, trace element content and the effect of soil content in avoiding undue chemical and water fluctuations (buffering activity). All of the John Innes products, simply offer a different level of nutrients to boost initial growth all the way until the final result.

Sand - Coarse sand helps to improve drainage by allowing excess water to infiltrate through the compost, preventing water-logging.

Lime-free grit sand is included to allow excess water to drain from the compost and so prevent waterlogging. This is a richer mixture for final re-potting of gross feeding vegetable plants, and for mature foliage plant. Alternatively, at the time of pricking out, incorporate slow-release fertilizer granules according to the manufacturer’s instructions.Enriched with vermiculite to retain moisture and nutrients, it also feeds for the first three weeks. These qualities make John Innes composts ideal for long-lived plants kept in containers for more than one growing season. Most plants grow best in soil that’s within a specific pH range, so it’s useful to know your soil’s pH.
