At the Countess's studio in St James Palace the Smiths associated with leading artists such as Sir George Frampton, sculptor of the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and royal visitors such as King Faisal of Arabia. The family lived in the small village of Olton in Warwickshire and it was there that she wrote and illustrated the book. I love her cycling around lanes stopping to watch or draw and taking the train and seeing the the plants and birds in different counties. In 1911 Edith Holden, at the age of thirty-nine, married Ernest Smith, a sculptor, seven years her junior.By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. You really wouldn't know it was 2nd hand except for the lovely inscription inside the book from when it was first gifted. May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text. Elegant and absolutely beautiful, this book is a visual banquet that I will continue to enjoy whenever I open its pages!

Presented to retain the charm and beauty of the original volume filled with Holden’s hand-drawn illustrations of the English countryside’s flora and fauna through the changing seasons of the year, as well as handwritten notes, observations, and quotations, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady makes a lovely addition to any home’s library or side table.I bought this charming book for its beautiful month by month illustrations on vellum coloured pages. We take intellectual property concerns very seriously, but many of these problems can be resolved directly by the parties involved.

On the prior Monday morning Edith had complained to Ernest of a headache, but this was not uncommon and the matter had not been dwelt on. But as I've been skimming the written entries, I've been delighted by other details as well, such as the author's beautiful handwriting (in straight lines!Edith Holden’s ‘Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady’ from 1906 captured her observations on the English countryside’s changing seasons, accompanied by exquisite illustrations of its flora and fauna. It was absolutely wonderful to follow along with Holden's year and feel almost like I'd stepped back in time to forage and wander with her, and I know I'm going to treasure this gorgeous book for many years to come. On 16 March 1920, Holden was found drowned in a backwater of the River Thames, near Kew Gardens Walk. Climbing up the banks to meet them are tall purple fox-gloves and nodding heads of grasses heavy with pollen, mingled with Purple and Yellow Hatches and Clover blossom.

I shall enjoy reading it again and studying the illustrations - especially as I also have the adult colouring book. To reduce the risk of fire, never leave vintage electrical or electronic products plugged in unattended. this book would be found interesting to anybody who is interested in the Natural history or the Edwardian period. It was of course used, but in very good condition, just slight discolouration to the edges of the pages, but for me that just added to its vintage charm.Edith Holden's handwritten works, including her favourite poems, personal thoughts and observations on the wildlife surrounding her Warwickshire home are exquisitely illustrated by beautiful paintings on very page of flora and fauna of the countryside through the seasons. And, you might have noticed, I purposely did not Americanize the words in my review that she used in her memoir. This book is interesting to read, with many beautiful illustrations, many pieces of poetry, and pretty handwritten text. Throughout this year, I have been reading my hard copy of Edith Holden's THE COUNTRY DIARY OF AN EDWARDIAN LADY. Holden was born in Kings Norton in Worcestershire in 1871, and grew up in a small Warwickshire village with her family.
