Interesting that Emma points to the French term auto-fiction as what Ernaux’s doing as we used to teach it as ‘life writing’. A Woman's Story is Annie Ernaux's "deeply affecting account of mothers and daughters, youth and age, and dreams and reality” ( Kirkus Reviews). I’m not saying that books on death and dying aren’t valuable and shouldn’t be read, it’s just that I find them a hard slog, and naturally, not very enjoyable.
