About this deal

Inserting and removing SD cards is a pretty straightforward process (it works just like doing it on a camera), but there are a few things one should keep in mind. If you are mostly going to connect to the drive to a computer you may think a ‘dumb’ external disk would be a better bet, but don’t forget the built-in SD slot – you could still enjoy the security of easy backup in the field without having to carry a laptop with you all the time. Finally, the drive has it’s own inbuilt battery which gives it up to 10 hours of power for backing up the cards or connecting to a tablet or phone. If you work as a team, multiple users can access the content of the My Passport wirelessly at the same time too.

Again a faster SD card could see this process completed sooner, but generally I’d insert the card and let it finish the task unattended, sometimes with the drive in a bag or on a car seat. WD offers a wealth of portable drives, ideal for backing up your photos, videos and other precious data, but most are simple devices which require a host computer or laptop to provide power and data transfer over a cable. WD’s SSD version is available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB or 2TB models, while the older hard drive-based version is available in 1 to 4TB models. Above: One on side of the drive you’ll find a spring-loaded SD slot which like those in camera bodies will swallow a card whole without any portion sticking out; push it in and it’ll spring out sufficiently for you to grab it.Using an integrated 6,400 mAh power bank, you get the perfect travel partner to keep your devices running. The Fujifilm XF 23mm F2 R WR delivers a 35mm full-frame equivalent field of view and stands out due to its small size and weather-resistant build.

With all modern devices going with USB Type C connectivity, it was disappointing to see micro USB 3.While I was pretty unhappy about how slow Gnarbox backs up images from SD cards, I wondered how WD My Passport Wireless SSD would do in comparison. Next to this is an old-style USB 2 port for charging external devices like phones using the generous 6700mAh internal battery as a power bank, or for connecting external card readers; as a USB 2 port though, the data speeds are not going to be as quick as they could have been. In this review, we will be taking a closer look at this device and see how it fares as a backup solution for photographers. While I previously did not consider the WD My Passport-series devices for my backup needs when traveling, the latest Wireless SSD version is something I would certainly consider for my own needs and recommend to other photographers. Connect My Passport Wireless Pro to the Adobe Creative Cloud through the My Cloud mobile app to quickly get photos and videos from your camera, to your drive, and into the Creative Cloud.

With the My Passport Wireless SSD connected to my home access point, I was able to connect to it using two laptops and an iPad over Wifi, as well as a Windows 10 PC connected to my home network with a cable. The software is able to read thumbnails from RAW files (using the embedded JPEG thumbnails in RAW files), so you can preview images from both SD cards and the built-in storage. You can only imagine how painful it will be to transfer files from XQD, CFast and other fast media types…you will need to wait a while for the process to finish. The WD My Passport Wireless SSD is designed to backup the contents of SD memory cards in the field, without the need for a laptop or an AC power supply. The one-touch copy button lets you back up photos and videos with the built in SD card reader or the integrated USB port without a laptop or software. When I copied approximately 53 GB of data to Gnarbox, it took a total of 45 minutes and 27 seconds, something I was very unhappy about, as it only took around 11 minutes to copy the same data to my computer.

After all, you can’t ingest photos to a laptop when the lid is closed, meaning it has to remain open for the entire process. Does it do incremental backups of both video and images with Sony complicated folder structure of video files? Another function I really like about the drive is the ability to use the WiFi connection to connect to an iPad and watch movies or videos while travelling. port, you can easily transfer media from an external USB storage device like a DLSR or CF card reader. In truth a pair of pants can weigh more than a laptop, so one fewer makes room, though I usually have no trouble with room in the photo backpack I carry on board as my “personal item”.To my knowledge, the only camera that allows this is the Ricoh GRII (see my compact camera roundup for the method). So in this test, there’s no doubt the 5GHz direct connection was the fastest wireless option, although the similarity in speed between the 2. This would have been a great solution, since it would have given the option to the end user on how they want to transport the device and what part(s) they want to take with them. For 1Tb SSD, and the RAV, and the USB Hub, i spend about 370 EUR, and gives me more options than the WD My Passport – think thats about 520 EUR for 1Tb and does not allow me to copy from XQD.
