About this deal

With all the lovely savory recipes I’ve made from Home Cookery Year, there are many enjoyable dessert recipes too — since it is the season for apples here, I baked up the Caramel Apple Cake. These are split further, to allow the reader to find recipes that fit the bill whether they’re looking for a quick midweek supper, a budget meal from the larder, something a little more luxurious, and so on.

What I appreciate about Thomson’s book is the variety of recipes, while her cooking is not plant-based there is a clever index of vegetarian recipes at the back of the book that helps for quick and easy reference. A fragile copy, poor quality paper is tanned and brittle, short tear to fore-edge of most pages, cover tanned and foxed with tears and an area of loss to front cover. Thomson’s recipes aren’t precious, they’re delicious and robust enough to be subjected to the whims of the home cook, ingredient availability or both. Tasting butter sold from barrels needs special persistence: “Being made at different times, the layers in casks will vary greatly; and you will not easily come at the goodness but by unhooping the cask, and trying it between the staves. The whole family liked this salad but my husband was cringing the whole time, afraid the buckwheat groats would break his teeth, so that was a downer.

In this fabulous anniversary edition, original recipes from the updated editions are included plus 50 new classics, sure to become firm favourites.

Extremely tasty, I had this with corn tortillas, shrettuce, sour cream, pink pickled onions and guac. She has written about food for publications including the Guardian, Telegraph, BBC Good Food Magazine and Countryfile Magazine. Thomson has been inspired, she says, by the ‘evergreen’ cookbooks her mother had (‘and still has’) on her shelves. It should read “apple, pumpkin, amaretti, chocolate, figs and sultana cake with brandy and rum” – no less! So, it’s been a while since my last post and I was inspired by another food blogger Janes Patisserie who recently posted her scone recipe and I thought I’d have a go at making some seeing as it had been a while since I last made them!Following the rhythm of the seasons, Thomson encourages the home cook to become more confident with their own cooking practices. The Dairy Book of Home Cookery takes you through all the essential cooking techniques and now includes over 950 recipes from soups to sauces, dips to desserts, pastry to pickles and curries to cakes.
