About this deal

They’re completely independent – when pressing one, the other one doesn’t move at all (as sometimes happens on dual e-switches that are this close together. When I look closer at the inside of the light I also notice how Fenix nicely puts its products together and properly finishes them.

Unfortunately, there is no USB-C output (which is the one feature I was surprised wasn’t implemented here. They say that the floodlight is fantastic and is perfect for illuminating the full width of the path ahead.

In an emergency situation the LR40R can be powered by 1, 2 or 3 18650 cells, however this will severley decrease the output and runtime.

On the box we spot a couple of action shots where the light is used and find most of the specifications. From my experience, Fenix lights are really well designed, they use quality materials and finishes, have great constant-current drivers, and publish truthful ANSI specs. In reality this leaves you with a beam which reaches quite far, and because you don't highlight yourself you can see even further. It’d take this from being a light with great throw and high output to being a light with great pleasant throw and extremely high output and great temperature…. The switch labels are too small to easily distinguish the padlock from the parallel beam lines, spread beam lines or combined straight and spread lines, so whatever setting the ring switch is actually on, you end up turning it one way or the other to find the one you want.

is hottest, then one which comes near the end of the runtime where in fact the battery pack is hotter than the head as the cells give their last bit of power. Hold the push button for ten seconds and the torch will flash twice to let you know it has entered the sensor function.

A. Yes, the light is internally waterproof and is thus still waterproof without the port cover in place. Aside from slightly missing the intensity specs (by my measurements) and the lack of a tripod mount, I can’t find much to complain about. Over the past year or so I’ve noticed a handful of lights offering both Spotlight and Floodlight modes, though it’s still not something that I would consider to be common.I'll guess it's used for around 45 minutes every day and the battery lasts a good couple of months on a single charge. It is a serious light, for serious use and is both large and heavy, but at the same time, considering its performance, it is very compact. The triangular head of the TK72R is the smallest by far because the light has only three reflectors. The LR40R is powered by the included ARB-L37-12000 lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack or it can also use one to four 18650 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in an emergency situation, however the less batteries used the lower the outputs available will be. A really low, and energy efficient mode is missing which makes the LR40R not that great for use indoors.
