About this deal

And you’re giving him an awful lot of looks that say I’d like to jump on you with my mighty roller-derby strength. Alex, Approximately provides a perfect mixture of romance, comedy, and realistic drama that doesn’t revolve around the main relationship, simultaneously tackling important subjects that everyone can learn from. Okay I've heard so much about this book and how it's a YA, cute ass retelling of You've Got Mail and I reallllly wanted to read it.

Overall I feel like if I had read this before reading any other books by Jenn, I think I might have liked it more. I recommend to anyone who fancies a summer-read, especially to those who still reminisce about 90's romcom. I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with the way the ""trust"" conversations enfolded because somehow their trust looks very much like "you must tell me everything at all time" and what happened to keeping some kind of secret garden? Not to mention, her father is one of the MVPs of the novel- can I please just watch him geek out over Settlers of Catan? Then there's this time when Bailey's dad tells her that she's a great detective and EXCUSE ME WHILE I CHOKE ON MY DRINK?Apparently, according to the audiobook narrator’s interpretation, the two syllables should be emphasized separately. He’s not that worried about Davy being on one of the most addictive and dangerous drugs in existence.

Porter's former best friend takes on a sort of villainous role, but there's something still pathetic about him, an addict who was led down a dark path after a serious injury. Great set of interesting character's, beautiful setting and a lovely romance that is paced wonderfully. Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush. Alex, Approximately picks up after their friendship has already begun, and Bailey is going through a major change in her life: she's leaving behind her mother and pretentious stepfather behind in DC and moving to California to live with her father.

Also, even though it's literally so obvious who Alex is, they tell you in the freaking description of the book. A modern-day YA reminiscent of You've Got Mail, Alex, Approximately, is a story of summer, first love, and hidden identity. But finding someone based on online conversations alone proves harder than Bailey thought, and with her irritating but charismatic (and potentially attractive? I wanted it from Jenn Bennett's name and my undying love for her other YA book, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart.

That’s an addiction that is almost impossible to break, and, we’re told, the sh*ttiness of Davy’s family life only spurs him more toward drugs. It's plain to see that even though these two are opposites in a lot of ways, there are sparks between them. I love that Bailey not only adores classic movies, just like Porter, but she also leaves her house with the best hair and outfits that mirror the style of Lana Turner. While with strangers he paints the persona of a cocky surfer, but that mask easily falls away with Bailey. The characters, the writing, the romance all very engaging - there was not a time I thought it boring, which believe you me, not an easy thing to pull off. Because of their past and present conflicts, they learn to build a steady, trusting, judgment-free relationship. Classic movie fan Bailey “Mink” Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex.
