About this deal

Doing direct same-camera, same-subject, same time comparisons, it's the same as the 16-85mm VR, 18-200mm VR and 18-55mm AF-S- II. What’s more, I repeatedly forgot to re-set the original setting (getting back to normal autofocus), and hence I ended up with a handful of out-of-focus shots. But if you shoot portraits or weddings and want to stay with the DX format, this might be your top choice since that lens is like having three primes in one zoom. The 3x optical zoom offers a versatile wide-angle to moderate telephoto perspective that's suited to everything from landscapes and interiors to portraits and action. This lens was updated to a mark II version with the release of the D40 in November 2006, featuring a new external design and smoother zoom operation.

As for the other two zooms (18-105mm and 14-140mm): both offer a much greater zoom range which might be handy for beginners who are not sure about the usage of the lens. Nikon claim that the 18-55mm's Vibration Reduction system allows handholding at shutter speeds three stops slower than normal when shooting at 55mm focal length, and real-world shooting suggests that this is a pretty reasonable estimate. When zooming in to capture a photo, you can bring subjects into focus instantly and with absolute precision.

Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens. Nikon will not be held liable for damages that may result from any mistakes that this manual may contain. Just head over to our dedicated Sell or Part Exchange page, fill out the details, and we'll get back to you with an offer for your old gear.

Vibration Reduction (VR) system: Enables more stable handheld shooting and lets you shoot at up to four stops slower. Whether you’re taking portraits, group shots, or capturing a stunning landscape, this means you’ll be able to capture blur-free images time after time. So just pay attention to other indicators (such as the camera beep – which I hate, or the blinking circular control in the viewfinder). The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. I assume this is why Nikon included one extra aspherical element in the new third-generation design. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. MPB will also keep you informed about the status of your gear at every step of the way and the whole process is carbon neutral. Unfortunately the 18-55mm VR handles these situations particularly badly, especially at the telephoto end where almost half the frame can become covered with multi-coloured blotches of flare.

Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology offsets the shakiness of handheld shooting for sharper photos and steady videos. One can easily lose the previous habit of controlling focus acquisition through the short yet visible and audible refocusing process. I find this very handy and practical, especially when shooting close-ups (this lens has near-macro capabilities).

It's super-sharp, and can give images as good or better than the more expensive 16-85mm and 18-200mm lenses. It offers faster focus than most other Nikon lenses, as well as great sharpness, stabilizer and close-focus performance. Anything that isn’t as you would expect, we then make a note of and show this in the condition notes on the page. If straight lines are paramount, you'll be glad to hear that the distortion pattern is uniform across the frame, which should make applying corrections in image editing software relatively straightforward.Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. Shots considered 'sharp' have no visible blur at the pixel level, and are therefore suitable for viewing or printing at the largest sizes, whereas files with 'mild blur' are only slightly soft, and perfectly usable for all but the most critical applications. Uses the new Nikon Stepping Motor which is ultra quick and quiet which makes this lens ideal for shooting movies. So how to discern those which I recommend from those that I would not (not even for total beginners)?
