About this deal

I used the Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE for over a week and was generally happy with the experience. The Industrial and Mission Critical switches are both what I consider specialty models. The Industrial features a rugged fanless enclosure, designed for dirty, hot, or other challenging environments. It also has 8 PoE++ and 430W of power budget, so it is great for powering a lot of high-power PoE equipment too. The switch’s small touchscreen allows access to the switch’s various settings accessible via vertical or horizontal scrolling/swiping. Simple plug-n-play setup, helpful touchscreen

We'll start by looking at all of the current options for UniFi gateways, including some older ones that Ubiquiti no longer lists on their official store. Current Gateways All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application. Additionally, its (2) sine-wave, AC outputs can power 110V, AC devices, including a modem and gateway. The USW Mission Critical also features a 1.3" LCM color touchscreen that concisely displays key system and connection insights. This switch can be monitored or configured from anywhere with the powerful, intuitive UniFi Network web application and mobile app. All you have to do is plug it in, and that’s it, just like any unmanaged switch. Use one of its ports to connect to the existing switch or router, and the remaining ports will work as extensions of the wired network. I tried that out with the switch and could use its more advanced features, including port settings and bandwidth management, as shown in the screenshots above. However, none of these extras is essential for any home.

The higher-end switch models are interesting too, especially the Enterprise models with 25 Gbps SFP28 ports. Most switches with lots of SFP+ or SFP28 ports are much more expensive, but you pay for that by being limited to the UniFi controller software. These aren’t going to be a replacement for a typical data center switch until Ubiquiti can prove they have the software and features to match. Ubiquiti’s hardware tends to lead their software, so I’ll be interested to see how the development of that goes. As it exists right now, Ubiquiti’s current Layer 3 switch feature-set is still underwhelming, but they have been slowly making progress. If you’re interested in the L3 switches, I would still suggest waiting for their software and firmware to catch up. Aruba Instant On is another UniFi competitor, with a lineup of cloud-managed switches and access points. Aruba’s enterprise equipment is some of the best in the industry, but Instant On is a simpler, cheaper option that fits within the same price and feature area as UniFi. If you bring your own firewall/gateway and are OK with relying on Aruba’s cloud software, there is a lot to like. The software is simple to use and the hardware is well-engineered. All the Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE’s ports are on its front. Here they are when out of the box and when the switch is working. Note the two SFP+ ports and the touchscreen.

The screen includes four sections that show various settings and conditions of the switch accessible via vertical and horizontal swiping. It also has animations for the boot process, firmware upgrades, screensavers, etc. While physically different, BASE-T and SFP/+ are parts of the Ethernet family, sharing the same networking principles and Ethernetnaming convention — Gigabit Ethernet (1Gbps) or 10 Gigabit Ethernet (a.k.a 10GE,10GbE, or10 GigE).The switch delivered excellent performance via its 2.5Gbps ports which also worked well as PoE power senders. I tried them with multiple PoE devices simultaneously, including a BC500 cam, the U6 Enterprise, and a few other PoE+ Wi-Fi access points, and they all worked flawlessly. MikroTik is another common option for home and small business networks. MikroTik specializes in low-cost, high-performance switches, routers, and wireless equipment. They make a lot of similar equipment to Ubiquiti, without the UI polish or big marketing budget. The Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE’s two SFP+ ports can be turned into Multi-Gig ports via adapters — necessary when your existing network doesn’t have an SFP+ port. Shown in the pic are two TP-Link TL-SM5310-T (not included) used for the testing. The XG 6 PoE (Gen1) is another small switch, released toward the end of the 1st generation. It has four 10 Gbps RJ45 interfaces with PoE+, and two 10 Gbps SFP+ interfaces. With a high PoE budget and six high-speed interfaces, the XG 6 PoE (Gen1) may be older, but it can be a better fit than any alternatives depending on your network needs. Specialty: Industrial and Mission Critical Additionally, the USW Enterprise 48 PoE offers enhanced power supply failure protection when connected to the SmartPower Redundant Power System ( USP RPS sold separately). This switch can be monitored or configured from anywhere with the powerful, intuitive UniFi Network web application and mobile app.
