About this deal

They fit a particular niche that I was looking for in that I needed non-magnetic stones to pair with my magnetized sharpening table, and secondly, I wanted stones that weren't messy (like water stones). Hapstone Sharpening Systems are compatible with many different brands of stones including Edge Pro, KME, Venev and Chosera Naniwa. Ideal for putting an edge on knives, this stone is also the perfect choice for sharpening wood chisels, plane irons, and similar tools and comes complete with a high-quality suede protective case. Good point, I've seen anecdotal reports that you can sharpen a LOT of blades (like in the hundreds of sharpening sessions) before needing to etch. The one side of this plate is coated with 80 grit CBN and will flatten your sharpening stones in no time.

I’m looking at starting with the resin bonded cbn 50/40 micron and 20/14 micron stones if anyone has specific experience with these stones.

Spyderco Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) is a high-tech super abrasive that is second in hardness only to diamond. With a CBN 400, one can literally raise a heavy and stubborn burr in seconds and spend 10's of minutes and multiple steps and stone progressions in trying to remove that burr and get a clean apex! It never requires flattening (though in all fairness neither do diamond stones) and it will sharpen any tool steel, including the S90V produced by Crucible. And if I only plan on sharpening to 800 + stropping, I would certainly appreciate the better ascetics of the edge. As hard as it is to glue to the high energy surfaces of diamonds cheap and diamond anything is a crapshoot.

The quality of the products does not correspond to the premium class that the Poltava Diamond Tools plant produces today :(. Seems more aggressive than my 80 grit EdgePro diamond matrix stone; this thing blasts through steel and throws big fluffy filings. And 800 grit + 3 micron strop should provide a very nice working/long lasting edge, no need for anything much higher (again, not worried about getting mirror polished egdes).

The broad, perfectly flat carbon steel embryo of this stone is coated with fast-cutting 400-mesh CBN on one side and finer 800-mesh CBN on the other. And the grit rating seems to be finer than how they're marked, (mine anyway) seem to cut and feel like something less aggressive than their designation states. These characteristics exceed the values of synthetic diamonds and conventional abrasives such as silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. I believe that the grit grades on these stones are ramped up to a point of not being true and correct.
