About this deal

The prologue to The Burning Chambers features one of those descendants in that same graveyard in 1862. Does that mean you had the prologue--which is also, it sounds like, the ending of the quartet--planned before you started? This is historical fiction to devour. Nobody does it like Kate Mosse." - Anthony Horowitz, New York Times bestselling author of The Magpie Murders This is a hard balance to strike in any work of historical fiction, but when done right, it is a wonder to behold. The result is a novel that re-creates a moment and place in time--in this case, 1562 in the southwest of France--while also speaking to the universal experience of humans in times of great strife and upheaval. What is right and what is wrong in such a time? How does one press forward without knowing what the next day holds? And what of love, and family, and belonging amidst an ever-changing landscape rife with violence, torture and betrayals? What does it mean to be faithful, and what does it mean to act in the name of that faith? In light of thousands dying, how do we remember to value the life of each individual on his or her own merits?

Kate is the Co-Founder and Chair of the Board of the Women’s Prize for Fiction and in June 2013, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to literature. She lives in Sussex. Rich with historical detail, as you’d expect from Mosse, but it’s Minou, the fiery heroine, who makes this a must-read - Good Housekeeping Book of the Month Bringing sixteenth-century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse’s number one bestselling novel The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love, betrayal, war, adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties. Mosse is a master storyteller, balancing thrilling suspense with complex characters and a thoughtful exploration of a fascinating time in history. Her heroine Minou is a pleasure to root for: clever, loving, down-to-earth and courageous! -- Madeline Miller, author of The Song of Achilles and Circe Grazia Book of the Week Mosse’s narrative lyricism, beautifully drawn female characters and deft journey from the past to the present day are a cut above

The first book in a new series of novels by Kate Mosse, The Burning Chambers is sublime historical fiction. It is set in France, in the year 1562, when the Wars of Religion were beginning to take hold. These were a sequence of eight civil wars between Catholics and Huguenots and the loss and destruction was profound, with several million people dead or displaced over the 36 years these wars raged on for. Such a very long time; what madness. Kate Mosse is the author of eight novels and short story collections, including Labyrinth, the first in the bestselling Languedoc Trilogy, and The Taxidermist's Daughter. Her latest novel, The Burning Chambers (available June 18, 2019), is the first in a planned quartet from Minotaur Books that spans a 300-year history of the Huguenots, starting with the early days of the Wars of Religion in 16 th- century France. Mosse is the co-founder of the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction, and she divides her time between Chichester in West Sussex and Carcassone in the southwest of France. Emprendí con entusiasmo la lectura de esta nueva trilogía, después de haber leído, hace algún tiempo, El laberinto y Sepulcro de esta misma autora. That rare thing, a novel with vast scope and ambition, brilliantly achieved, but also deeply personal, finely detailed and nuanced. I was utterly immersed in this spell-binding story - Rosamund Lupton, author of Three Hours

Kate Mosse has returned to what she does best, the French Languedoc period, mixed with a dash of mystery, twists and violence. Toulouse: As the religious divide deepens in the Midi, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as sectarian tensions ignite across the city, the battle-lines are drawn in blood and the conspiracy darkens further. Meanwhile, as a long-hidden document threatens to resurface, the mistress of Puivert is obsessed with uncovering its secret and strengthening her power . . . Mosse keeps her focus firmly on the love stories and the mysteries surrounding Minou and Piet, a touching affair of the heart which keeps the entire novel grounded. Because make no mistake, the plot of The Burning Chambers is enormously complex and ambitious; the sheer number of characters is mind-blowing. Piet Reydon, originally from Amsterdam, is visiting Carcassonne to do business. He does charitable work for Huguenot community in Toulouse.stars rounded up to 3. I've read and enjoyed two of Kate Mosses' books before, but unfortunately I thought that The Burning Chamber was not of the same high standard. I loved learning about the time period and thought her descriptions of the places and historical events were very well done, but I found the characters in the story very one dimensional. I enjoy reading about people that are a bit more complex, and here you were either a hero (with no personality flaws) or a villain (with no redeeming qualities). Mosse is a master storyteller, balancing thrilling suspense with complex characters and a thoughtful exploration of a fascinating time in history. Her heroine Minou is a pleasure to root for: clever, loving, down-to-earth and courageous!"―Madeline Miller, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Circe

Kate Mosse's "Languedoc Trilogy": Labyrinth, Sepulchre, and Citadel are three of my favorite historical fiction novels, so I was oh so thrilled when I heard she was writing a new series set again in the Languedoc province of France and even more excited to get my hands on a review copy of The Burning Chambers (let me just say that there's some serious cover love going on between me and this book! Gorgeous!).A thrilling adventure and a heartbreaking love story, The Burning Chambers is a historical novel of excitement, conspiracy and danger like no other . . .
