About this deal

The writing is clear and you get to learn about the habits, lifestyles, habitats, and physical and mental traits of the birds. This is a wonderful book to add to the collection of anyone interested in either or both birds and avian art. Dit is een boek dat je niet van A tot Z moet lezen, mag natuurlijk, maar ik leg het boek het liefst naast het bed: om er vogel per vogel van te genieten. From Madagascar and the helmet vanga to the Galapagos Islands and the courtship rituals of the male blue-footed booby (think dad dancing, but with big, blue, webbed feet), Unwin introduces a dazzling array of our feathered friends. Na Een reis om de wereld in 80 planten en Een reis om de wereld in 80 bomen is er nu een boek over vogels.

In accordance with The Post Office, the last recommended date for Christmas posting is 18th December (2nd Class) and 20th December (First class). I finished reading this a couple days ago, but I went back to peruse and take notes on interesting facts about the birds which fascinated me. Mención especial a la belleza de ilustraciones de Ryuto Miyake, que me han tenido embelesada toda la lectura. For while Mike Unwin does in fact (and fortunately) show the conservation status of and the threats facing the bird species he has chosen for Around the World in 80 Birds, Unwin's criticism and his condemnation of what has caused and is causing avian conservation issues (habitat destruction, large scale hunting and poaching, climate change etc. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously.

Maar Een reis om de wereld slaat me met verstomming: wat een kleuren, wat een variatie, hoe indrukwekkend mooi en boeiend. Each species has beautiful illustrations and a brief description, including their threatened or endangered status.

The prose is wonderfully conversational, perfect for the amateur birder or naturalist (such as myself! Highly recommend this book for somebody like me who loves nature but doesn't know too much about it outside the mammal kingdom. The editors have done a good job adding non-metric equivalents for length and weight to the descriptions in the original.Loaded with beautiful illustrations and scientific information, as well as some tidbits of the cultural history of each location and the bird itself, the book is truly awe-inspiring. I'd never heard of the oilbird or the purple-crested turaco before but my world is much the richer for having learned about them here. Many birds come steeped in folklore and myth, some are national emblems and a few have inspired scientific revelation or daring conservation projects. The only thing that would make me enjoy this even more, is if it was a nature television series with Attenborough narrating.

The author provides not only interesting biology, but also explores how each bird species has interacted with humans, whether in folklore ,mythology or real life …. I do wonder how the author narrowed down his choices - some are VERY unique so you can understand why, while others sometimes are a little head scratching. They can sing the most beautiful songs, shriek the eeriest cries, create the most stunning nests, dance the funniest mating dances and so much more! This beautiful and inspiring book tells the stories of 80 birds around the from the Sociable Weaver Bird in Namibia which constructs huge, multi-nest 'apartment blocks' in the desert, to the Bar-headed Goose of China, one of the highest-flying migrants which crosses the Himalayas twice a year. I think at least 50% of these short bird essays ended by mentioning that the birds are at risk of extinction due to habitat or food loss, global warming, or harmful human intervention. The other is the Crested Caracara which we were told is really intelligent and curious, but has become a pest in certain areas of Central America, raiding houses by going down chimneys and opening doors and windows.
