About this deal

This project is a sturdier, higher-end version of the dresser litter box enclosure we discussed earlier. The creator upcycled a dresser they already had on hand, but if you don’t have one in your garage, expect to spend some time thrifting the perfect option. The only requirements are it has three drawers and be made of wood. Once you have the dresser, the project is fairly simple but requires power tools and basic DIY knowledge. You can customize the color of the dresser to match your décor. This enclosure opens easily for cleaning, which might be its best feature. You can hide a cat litter box by putting it in a quiet, less busy area of your home so it’s out of the way (just make sure your cat can find it). Disguise the box by using a litter box enclosure that doubles as a bench, cabinet, or tabletop. Remember, it doesn’t have to exactly match all your other furniture. It can be something in the same family that complements your design scheme. Barrett, L. (1931). Influence of forest litter on the germination and early survival of chestnut oak, Quercus montana, Willd. Ecology 12, 476–484. doi: 10.2307/1928993

Cats are especially sensitive to loud and high-pitched sounds. Avoid unnecessarily noisy activities inside your home unless you can isolate yourself during these events or your cat has a place to hide if he wants to. Cesarano, G., Incerti, G., and Bonanomi, G. And after researching modern litter boxes, she finally found the perfect one: a Japanese cat igloo.

An exploration of the mechanisms behind plant litter–decomposer affinity in terrestrial ecosystems. New Phytol. 204, 307–314. doi: 10.1111/nph.12959 Do not store your pet's waste in a receptacle located right next to the litter box. Doing so could fail to sufficiently remove odors from the litter box area, which could make your cat not want to use his box even if it has been recently scooped. Size: If you have a large breed cat or a kitty who needs a considerable amount of litter box space to feel comfortable, you will want to buy a big covered litter box. Large cats will generally need box with a 20” length at the very least. For maintenance cleaning, a built-in bag anchor at the front assists in holding a waste bag open as you scoop. And rinsing with soap and water is all that's required to fully clean the litter box. Catit also makes liners that can be placed in the bin under the litter making cleaning out the bin more streamlined. A hooded cover can also keep the contents of the litter box inside as much as possible, but many cats, especially the larger ones, feel restricted by a ceiling on their litter box. You should find want keeps your cat the most at ease to prevent peeing and pooping outside of the litter box.

Keep litter boxes on the floor. You should make it as easy as possible for your cat to use its designated restroom, which means keeping the box on his level. [6] X Research source Imagine if you had to climb or jump up to a platform positioned above your head every time you needed to use the toilet! This would be rather inconvenient and unpleasant, and your cat wouldn't like it, either. Here, we demonstrated how root and shoot litter can affect PSFs through physical, chemical and biotic pathways. Although an emerging body of literature supports the potential importance of litter-mediated PSFs, many critical knowledge gaps remain which require further investigation. Here we identify five important avenues for further research into the role of litter-mediated PSFs: Just like humans, cats prefer quiet, out-of-the-way places to do their business. For litter box enclosures, letting your cat adjust to the box and its placement may be more important than the box itself. Just make sure to put the litter box enclosure in a space that has less traffic, but is still accessible for your cat. If you have a multiple cat household, you may need to get another box. Cats sometimes become territorial about their litter boxes. Another box may encourage your cats to use their litter boxes instead of your plants. Carbon: nitrogen: phosphorus stoichiometry in fungi: a meta-analysis. Front. Microbiol. 8:1281. doi: 10.3389/fmicb.2017.01281Our testers were each assigned a litter box to be used and evaluated for several months. Ease of cleaning, mess prevention, design, and overall value were all considered as their cat (or cats for many!) handled their business, with our participating humans tidying up after them. Testers documented their cats' and their own initial impressions of the litter box assigned to their home. Disentangle the interactions between litter-mediated vs. rhizosphere-mediated PSFs. We already know that rhizosphere pathogens or symbionts play a strong role in mediating PSFs ( Bennett et al., 2017; Semchenko et al., 2018) and litter-mediated PSFs are gaining more attention ( Freschet et al., 2013; Hobbie, 2015; Zhang et al., 2016; Manrubia et al., 2019), but interactions and their relative hierarchy of importance needs to be elucidated. For example, modeling work showed that rhizosphere-mediated PSFs may modify or override litter-mediated PSFs ( Ke et al., 2015). Also, microbes in the rhizosphere can immobilize the nutrients liberated from plant litter, thereby buffering litter-mediated PSFs via nutrient cycling ( Miki et al., 2010). These findings indicate the need to study rhizosphere- and litter-mediated PSFs in combination (see Box 1 for an example) to disentangle their interactions and relative importance. This will require full-factorial experiments where rhizosphere- and litter-mediated PSFs are manipulated. Within such studies it will be important to carefully consider spatial and temporal scales at which litter- and rhizosphere-mediated PSF effects occur, as these are not necessarily the same. In addition (stage-structured), models could be powerful to further explore how litter-mediated PSFs could operate ( Ke et al., 2015; Campbell et al., 2016). Reward your cat for staying away from the plants. Cats in general respond better to positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement. When you see your cat leaving a plant alone, reward the behavior.
